What an absolutely chronic case of irony and hypocrisy,
Ireland leading the call for the Nature Restoration Law, but keep allowing developers to cut down trees and bulldoze wooded areas to build more housing estates.
How two faced is that??

We can build taller and denser but the very same watermelons (green on outside, pinko leftie on inside) would complain about that too

In meantime we have the fastest growing population in Europe both due to natural increase and immigration, we are also one of lowest forest cover wise

yet in the same breath berating Irish people about climate change, the environment, etc….

The policies they advocate only ensures a more rapid degradation to our environment and climate as humans are the main driver of climate change. So more people here = more emissions , more climate degradation….

They’ll just never receive a single vote again from me in my lifetime…. Id even vote FG before them….

We can’t still have this fallacy of Ireland being a low rise country and also be against urban sprawl. The world population has doubled in the last 60 years. Depopulation ended in Ireland (apart from Leitrim) in the 70’s

People will happily live in 20 storey buildings here. Build the bloody things.

Actually it does.

If people were dying because of say some catastrophic environmental reason, or because of a dysfunctional economy, more people would survive because they can just immigrate.

I suspect you may need to radically review this, if not now in a few years. By their very nature most economic migrants coming here are young, fertile, already have family or ready to get going here. In several ways, it is key to getting a foothold with or without formal citizenship, hook up or not and have a couple of kids, child benefit and all that accrues, get them to primary school age and bob's your uncle. Almost impossible to return them even after all the appeals are exhausted.

Compare that to Irish middle class children, living in the 'boxroom' or renting at exorbitant rates, putting off having children due to costs and uncertainty over where they'll live etc.

I was a member of the Green Party at a time when Green philosophy correctly identified growth of human population as a challenge to resources and climate etc. The modern Irish Greens have forgotten this completely it looks like.

But to the OP, yes we should we using more brown field sites and regenerating urban areas, clearing low rise and building higher on same footprints.

In that scenario, it's the "not killing people" that is resulting in more emissions than if the person was killed.

In your example, moving people from overcrowded Brazilian slums to new cities carved out of the rain forest has the same environmental impact?

Natural increase? Ireland’s birthrate went below replacement rate (2.1 ?) in the early 90s , and has more less been falling since then

Reading this thread I see lots of people seem to still think overpopulation is a problem in the long term. The die is cast. Global population decline is inevitable given current trends. May even start as early as 2050. Our grand kids will be faced with the problems associated with depopulation. One thing in the past that had not been baked into population models is the rapid decline in fertility rates once infant mortality falls. This will occur within a generation in most cases
