Recommendation for small car

Want to buy a 2022 small car which will be mainly for urban driving, small mileage. I currently have a Renault Cleo which has given me huge problems from the outset. Had a previous Cleo which was a great car, think I just got unlucky on this one.

I'm looked at Nissan Micra, and Hyundai i20 but there aren't many available so looking for other recommendations. Won't go with Peugeot either, had a Fiesta before the first Cleo and it was lovely but there are very few of those also. Thanks for any suggestions

    What's your budget?

You could look at a brand new Dacia Sandaro or Sandaro Stepway if value for money over ascetics is the preference. Most of the Dacia parts are from parent company Renault so reliability will be similar. Quality of materials will be a bit lower given they are built to a budget but your getting a brand new car with a long manufacturer's warranty.

Only from my own experience, I had a toyota yaris and a opel corsa. Both decent, the toyota i think was the better one.

Thanks everyone, got a Nissan Micra and am delighted with it. My Renault Clio (3 years old) had given me endless problems so I wouldn't touch anything to do with Renault again. There are far fewer Hyundai's available and I got a better trade in for the Micra. Drove a Corolla for years and love the Toyota but the few available were outside my budget. Thanks all and happy driving!

Consider an ev. They won't give you any costly mechanical issues.

For me the best small car is HONDA JAZZ. Look for an Irish car (Not a Honda Fit - Japanease import).
The Jazz is very pratical car and for me is the King of realibility. In many rankings it was TOP one.

Another good option is Toyota Yaris. It's not pratical as Honda Jazz, but is super reliable.

If Jazz is the A plan and Yaris the B plan, Suzuki Swift could be the C plan. The car is reliable, very cheap to run and to maintain. A bit smaller but delivers a good value for money.

An alternative to Hyundai i20 is Kia Rio. They are almost the same cars.

Good options that I might work for you: VW Polo, Skoda Fabia, Seat Ibiza (they are all very similar) - Please only look for PETROL versions. Diesel cars re not suitable for city driving/small mileage.

If you are ok with smaller cars: Toyota Aygo, Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto.

I would NOT recommend: Citroen C3, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Fiat 500. I know people that are very happy with them, but a lot of people also had a lot of problems. They are NOT reliable in my opinion. Some owners will say that "they never had ap roblem"… Do not trust them, these cars are crap.

Lol. Taking this forum stuff VERY seriously aren't you?

Not really. Rather than having over thousands irrelevant posts, I would prefer to have fewer, but more helpful and relevant contributions. For example: I would never reply in topic quoting good answer and saying that the person is taking the forum too serious. Instead, I just help with good answers.

I like the i20s and the Kia Rio and some of they are more powerful than the Yaris, while it's a good car the car is gutless, mind you I never drove a newer hybrid one but this is adding complexity and won't offer much if any better fuel economy over a 1.0l, more power and auto yes but for what benefit in the end only more cost to the driver. Personally I think the newer gen yaris and clio are ridiculously over priced vs the older 1.0 Yaris and 1.2 clio.

the hyundai are far better value for money in my opinion and available with decent petrol engines.

The Jazz might be worth a look alright but I prefer the interior of the Hyundai cars.

What year was it and engine and what problems?

I know someone interested in a Clio so want to inform them. Thanks.

Suppose it’s a bit late to point out that Renault build the Micra in France for Nissan on the Clio platform.

I never Googled it but afaik the Clio's, Dacia Sandero's are reliable so I do not know what problems the OP has had. I honestly didn't know the Micra was another shared model but I would assume it's reliable too.

I would recommend Yaris. I replaced mine 8 yrs ago with a Jazz just to get a bit more passenger space but really hardly noticable. But Jazz is now more expensive for parts due to UK plant closing down. That being said, I have never had more than a wiper blade to replace in those years.

Front sensors stopped working, air con didn't work, mirrors didn't open/close, constant 'error' messages appearing on the dash which would disappear/re-appear. Constantly in and out of Renault garage who had difficulty calibrating the issues. Everything that had to be repaired was done under warranty but it got to the point that I was losing confidence in both the car and the garage. Was sent between 2 Renault garages, each blaming the other. Got to the point I only drove it when I had to. It was the first car I didn't have checked out with my mechanic. He was mad busy and said that as an 18 month old car from a 'reputable' garage I should be fine! Needless to say I had the Micra checked but the Cleo was a bad experience. It was probably just that car because both my son and I had driven Cleo's previously with no issues.

You are right it was just that car as you just got a bad one. As they are known to be reliable those Clio's.
