    It seems it was produced in a monastery in Iona established by the Irish Saint Columba and Irish monks probably worked on it, also it's believed that some work may have been done on it at Iona's sister monastery in Kells (Meath) where it remained for several centuries, so I think the Irish claim to it is fairly legitimate.

    It dates from around the time monks relocated from Iona back to Kells due to attacks.
    It's likely that that it was started in iona and finished in Kells. But could have been finished in Iona, or started in Kells. Either way, it has a much greater history and association with Ireland.
