Dublin airport

    Hi,

Towards end of May, I will be parking in Dublin airport (Terminal 1 Short Term Block C) from Sunday - Thursday.

When I arrive at airport (if I don't charge) my battery will be at about 20%, will need it to be close to 100% to get home again.

I have ESB, Tesla and Easygo apps.

I will be arriving back to airport carpark at about midnight with the other half and 2 children under 10. so less hassle is best at this time of night as have a 2 hour drive to get home.

What is best option for me to get going again?

Try and charge to 90% before I park up at airport - flight out is at an ok time of 13:30 so guess could do this.

or try and charge at airport before I leave, not sure of chargers there, a lot seem to be 22kw

    suggestions welcome

The simplest option would be to leave the car with someone in the area who has a Zappi and solar panels, they charge the car for free and then drop it into the long term car park

Unfortunately, I would probably get in trouble for hiring out my driveway 😁

If possible it would be best to top up before arriving at the airport. Blanch HPC hubs is probably the closest big hub but the traffic can be bad and it could be a long enough detour

The Ecars unit in the airport is the closest option but is usually very busy with taxis. Arriving at midnight should be quieter, so might be a good option for a charge on the return journey

Unfortunately the hubs at Applegreen Finglas or Circle K Clonsaugh aren't built. Hopefully in future there'll be more options close by

It would also be nice if there was a hub in the airport, but they only seem interested in cramming more passengers in rather than making it easier for drivers

Make sure you turn the departure timers off to stop the battery being drained by the preheating

I'd charge to near full before flying out, you don't want thoughts of having to charge up after a flight with kids playing on your mind when you're on a break

Thank you, I will take you up on your offer of free charging :)

Yeah, I think with the kids etc, its better to charge before I get to the airport and then have enough juice to go home - to save charging at 1 or 2am on return leg

Might just do do Tesla enfield on way up, cause from what I hear Dublin chargers seem to be fairly busy

Yeah, might charge it up so that its at 90% at airport as don't want to leave it sitting for a few days on a full charge

If you're not tied to that particular car park isn't there a charging service in the long term ones? Quick park maybe?

not sure, I picked the short term car park as want to be relatively near the ariport, just with the times and kids and a 2 hour drive in front of me after the flight lands, I don't want to be waiting on buses to long term car parks etc

Your best bet for a pre-flight charge up would be Applegreen Santry (Eircode K67 Y2C9) which has a Burger King and kids playground, and which has 4x180kW CCS chargers across 2 charge points.

Alternatively, if you're on your way from Enfield direction, it might be worth the brief M50 detour to Applegreen Ballymount which has the same bank of chargers, and unlike Blanchardstown is quick and easy to access.

Either way, get the AG Electric app installed and keep an eye on charge point availability while you're on your way!

thank you, what app do I need for this location, do yo know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,675 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

AG Electric it's called on my iPhone. Slight financial benefit to paying via the app, but you can tap with any debit card to pay at the charge points too

Applegreen Santry have EV chargers and they're fairly close to the Airport.

Charge to as high as your comfortable with.

Then a quick charge on the way home, preferably towards the end to get faster charging speeds.

I was thinking of just using Tesla Superchargers at Enfield

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,675 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

you'd still have a good bit of journey to go at that point, is the only issue. What time of the day on Sunday are you getting to the airport at?

Flight is at 13:30 so want to be parked up at airport at 11:30am

Tesla Enfield is 50km from airport, and the airport is 200km from my house, so 250km………but most of that motorway 😮

I have about 70kw of battery to play with, well I guess more so 65kw to do this 250km

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,675 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

I think you'd be absolutely fine arriving to Applegreen Santry at say 10:20am, getting some breakfast in the station while you get a nice charge for an hour. There should be little to no usage that time of the morning on a Sunday.

I would be inclined to only use Supercharging, a good bit going up and a little going home. And plan to get home with about 10%.

But only because I have a dislike (Perhaps irrational) of other charging, except perhaps for Ionity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,675 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

That's automatically irrational, unless you want to explain it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,569 ✭✭✭eagerv

Just experience over the last 4 years with 2 evs. Hopefully now improved, I did say it was possibly irrational..😉

There are slow chargers in the Terminal 1 and 2 car parks. They are reliable, but often full. The other option is to park in the Red Car park, where there are two rapid chargers. You could arrive a little early, charge up and then park.

I drive an EV and fly in and out of Dublin airport every week, so have plenty of experience with this.

park in the red car park and use the fast charger on the way out…..

    You're struggling to do 250km in a car with a 70 kWh battery😲

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,855 ✭✭✭obi604

I don't have the car too long, and haven't done too many journeys at motorway speeds. yes, its a 70 kWh of battery but lets be realistic - I will have between 90% and 10% battery to play with. so 56kwh from Dublin airport to do 250km

Motorway journey and faster speeds, if I get 22kwh per 100 k, that will give me about 255km. So not as if I have loads to play with.

Maybe my figures are off etc but that's how I see it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 141 ✭✭Bovakinn

This is the best option imo.
The shuttle bus is every few minutes and only takes a couple of minutes to get to the terminal.
It's a lot cheaper than the short-term car park too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,253 ✭✭✭jackofalltrades

    Those figures make sense.

Maybe try slowing down for the return trip, it can have a big impact on consumption.

I know my Kona will do 16 kWh per 100 km sitting at 100 km/h and about 18/19 doing 110 km/h.

It might save you having to stop and charge at 2am.

    ePower

Also, why aren't you charging to 100% for a long trip?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭useless

Your best bet is to swap your electric car with your friend/neighbour, drive their diesel car to the airport and let them drive your electric while you're on holidays 😉

Use the fast charger at the Circle K where the M1/M50 interchange is. Likely to be free, but worth checking the APP on route against the airport fast charger. Its only 5 minutes away.

I will be charging to 100% at my home before I leave. (If that’s what you mean)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 775 ✭✭✭CivilEx

I've flown in / out of Dublin Airport in the last month and used the Applegreen Electric in Santry (< 5 mins from the Airport), topping up to 90%+ before I parked the car, knowing that I only needed 50% to get me home without stopping.

Enjoy the break then, secure in the knowledge that you will simply arrive back and drive, without worrying about charging at night with tired kids to deal with. If you are worried about range on the way home, just drive at 110 instead of 120, it won't make that much difference to your travel time.

If you want to drive at the speed limit +vat but you are worried about your range, research other DC fast chargers on Plugshare that are around 150km from the airport on your route, (50km from your house), and try them out before you travel so that you have your "bail out" option if you need a 5 mins top up to get you home.

    Enjoy the break!

I’d be in favour of getting to the airport with the battery as close as possible to 90%, as it means you’ll get most of the way home on that same charge, so if you do need a stop on the route home, it’ll be close to home and you’ll be more precise in terms of you’ll know you only need 18% or whatever to make it home, and won’t need to ‘take on a few extra kWh’ for all eventualities.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭MarkN

there’s 6 chargers on 1st floor of short term T1 C… a gamble that there’s one free but I am often in the airport and rarely see them all being used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,855 ✭✭✭obi604

I checked this on google maps and navigated up the side road etc but could not see the chargers, image is from April 2023 so chargers may not have been installed then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 775 ✭✭✭CivilEx

The Google Maps image is out of date. See the Plugshare link above for more photos….

The chargers only went in there in September 2023

That petrol station is very close to the airport… my mother waits there to collect us, and when we clear passport control, I call her and she heads up to departures to collect us…

Thanks, so what do ye reckon is best/less quiet

    • Applegreen Santry
    • Circle K at the M1/M50 interchange

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,883 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

I would suggest Applegreen as there are 4x CCS plugs there…

use their app, and when on the M50 approaching the M1 interchange, see how many chargers are available and if the site is full, then maybe head to CircleK, but if there are chargers available, then head for there…

I'm assuming you want at least 90% for your return journey if you expect to use 80%. It might be more efficient to go with the Enfield option, depending on your charge curve. It can take as long to get from 80-100% as it does to go from 10-80%. So if you charge to 80% at Enfield, you're going to arrive at the airport at around 65%.

I'm not sure where you're heading, but you've a number of options to catch your charge curve on the way back and again minimise charge time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,855 ✭✭✭obi604

heading to Galway so Enfield may indeed be the best option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,375 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

I presume deepest westest Galway to get a distance of 250km?

If so, you've a number of options. Ionity Athlone would be comfortable (estimate 25% SoC) and you could (depending on your car's capabilities) take in up to 55% in about 15 minutes (based on 150kWh) leaving you a nice comfortable 80% to get home.

Doing it that way would mean the fastest charging possible without putting pressure on you at the arrival and leaving stage at the airport. Always the most fraught part of the journey anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,855 ✭✭✭obi604

no- east Galway, 200km from Dublin airport, but then add 50km to get to Dublin airport from Enfield

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,375 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

So 150 to Enfield and 50 to the airport and your expected range is about 250?

Probably still go with that route, but your SoC at the charge points will be slightly different. On the way up, you'd be at about 40%, charge to 80% in about 10 minutes (could push that to 90% but would probably take another 10) and arrive at the airport with 60% in the tank.

On the way back, stopping in Athlone would be about 10% (more if you pushed it above 80 in Enfield) and you'd again be on the road with 50% in about ten minutes. No point in paying for more than you need to get home with a reasonable surplus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,855 ✭✭✭obi604

actually, ABRP thinks I can do the round trip with 1 x 9 minute charge on way back. but a bit ambitious and cutting it tight.

My thinking now is this: Leave house at 100%, stop at enfield on way up when battery is at about 55%, charge for 30 mins and that might do me for whole trip

Not sure if already mentioned, but what is the car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,855 ✭✭✭obi604

2021. Id4 with 77 battery. 60,000 KM on the clock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,375 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

ABRP has the right idea. Except just add another five to ten minutes at Enfield and you're golden. That's the better option because you're at a low enough SoC on the way back to maximise your charge time.

I know you reckon your car has a range of 250km, but you also said you'd be doing about 22kWh/100km on the motorway. That adds up to over 300km off a 70kWh battery. So ABRP would seem to be quite accurate. Even if it's out by 10% that still leaves you plenty to get back to Enfield from the airport. So instead of 28% it might be as low as 20%. Quite a big margin there.

I'd second the vote for Applegreen, two chargers with two plugs each quadruples the chance of getting a charge

How are the size of spaces at Dublin Airport? Haven’t flown out of there in 20 years and I’ll be brining the EV9 in July. It can be a pain in the arse with its size in certain car parks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,248 ✭✭✭pad199207

EV9’s don’t do ‘Car Parks’ they prefer ‘Parking Lots’ 😁
