Tyres worn very quickly

I got 4 new tyres on the car 9 weeks ago

Already the front two are completely worn and now need replacing again.

I haven't been driving any extra than usual and previously my tyres would last around 12 months

The place that fitted them (main dealer garage) has claimed the tracking is now way out on the front wheels - despite them supposedly having done this when fitting them 9 weeks ago

Surely something isn't right here?

My driving style hasn't changed and I'm driving on the same roads as I always do.

If they did the tracking it should be on the invoice. And it would have to be way off to total your tyres in nine weeks. You didn't say how much mileage you did in that time though.

Are they worn right across the tread or just along one side ?

It's definitely the tracking then.

If they did the tracking it sounds like they messed up.

But you could have hit a kerb/pothole and put it out.

Lots of reasons for that to happen other than alignment. Could be suspension issues like worn bushings or even just tyre pressures.

It is very possible for the garage apprentice to make a complete mess of aligning a car.

I had a dublin tyre place Conpletely mess up alignment years ago to the point that it destroyed the tyres in a few weeks.

If you don't trust the dealer, maybe take it to an independent mechanic or tyre outlet for checking.

Sometimes it's just convenient. Car in for a service, dealer phones you to say your tyres are very near the minimum and do you want to replace them? Quotes a price and for the sake of convenience and maybe it's only costing €20 more than the tyre place so you say go ahead.

I am aware of a case where there was for tyres fitted and after having done approx 100 miles driver felt a ‘rattle’ and pulled in. One of the wheels was practically falling off it not having been sufficiently tightened. We are all human and make mistakes/errors at times.

I wonder if there was an error in that the garage assumed that the tracking was done - and I assume invoiced accordingly- but it was not done. Some garages do have a cctv in the precession.. one would expect to get at least 15,000 mls from a tyre.

Looking through docs now. Found receipt for tyres, no mention on it of tracking being done.

Mechanic definitely said the tracking was done

Tyres wearing after that short time and milage- definitely something up - talk to your garage that fitted them especially if no proof tracking was done - they have to take some responsibility considering they supplied and fitted - you’d have a “case” in the small claims court but appreciate you don’t want to do that but at least hold firm with them - this wasn’t your fault - they have to accept and fix

Just a few points on the idea of taking a small claims case:

1. No proof tracking was or was not done, nor paid for by OP
2. No way for the OP to prove they didn't drive like a loon for 9 weeks
3. Anything that happens after the car leaves is outside of the control of the garage (pothole, kerb etc)

The tracking on the car is out and has caused excessive tyre wear. Knowing the size and brand won't add anything to this discussion.

The OP needs to get back to the garage and see what they can do to resolve the problem. As already pointed out, if there is no tracking listed on a receipt, it will be very hard to prove as the evidence is not there. If the garage admit to doing the tracking but not documenting it, then ask them to supply a new set of tyres and fix the tacking.

Issue is most likely a problem with your suspension. All the tracking in the world is not going to do anything about that. What's the make/model of the car?

Tyres normally lasting 12 months is a big of a red flag to me?

4,000km in 9 weeks, works out to be 23,000km in 12 months, which is pretty low milage for even front tyres on a Front Wheel Drive car I would have said.

€80 per tyre, fitted, at a dealer, implies that they probably aren't greet tyres which were fitted to be honest.

@beggars_bush What is the car, how old is it, and what is the tyre size?
