The latest NADOCAST forecast of tornado probabilities has just gone through the roof across portions of Oklahoma into southern Kansas including OKC to Wichita. It will be interesting to see if this tornado outrbeak verifies.

I did several of those storm-chase tours in the states back in the early noughties. Those big tornadoes are the most extraordinary spectacles to watch, even from a couple of miles. When they pass by, there is a smell of newly mown lawn everywhere as grass, leaves and all sorts of foliage slowly fall back to earth.

The states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas are so vast and very sparsely populated that most of the tornado outbreaks don't impact towns or populated areas and just trundle harmlessly across the flat grasslands. Many even go unnoticed.

The tornado ripped through the 1,000-person town of Barnsdall, about a 40-minute drive north of Tulsa, on Monday night. It was the second tornado to hit the town in five weeks — a twister on April 1 with maximum wind speeds of 90 to 100 mph (145 to 161 kph) damaged homes and blew down trees and power poles in Barnsdall.

At least 20 tornadoes were reported in seven states overnight into Tuesday, as the tornado threat continues for parts of the country. The twisters were reported in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Tennessee.
