Want cheaper electricity? Then we have to go with Nuclear power

Its time to campaign for Nuclear power in Ireland and end our reliance on dirty fuels. Finland is a perfect example. They have Nuclear Power. It powers 50 per cent of there electricity and there electricity only cost 7cent per kwh compared to about 46cent per kwh here.

Fossil fuels kill more more people in a year than any Nuclear accident ever has.

Ireland needs Nuclear. Time to start a petition. Nothing to be afraid off. It's a clean and efficient way to produce electricity. We could get the French or the Finnish to run it for us untill we are confident enough to do it ourselves.

Unfortunately the populous here is simply too thick to ever contemplate going for nuclear.

This has been done to death on this site. We can't even build a metro, or a hospital even, without the country going into meltdown, nuclear will never happen in our lifetime. And of course it's all the Greens fault somehow even though FFFG have been in power since nuclear was an option.

We're too close to the UK and France, even if we never install a single nuclear plant we're already using nuclear power via interconnector, as well as being in the red zone in the event of another chernobyl.

How do nuclear plants deal with their nuclear waste these days? Is there an issue with toxic chemicals or radioactive matter that would pose an issue? It's not as simple as just build it and get cheap electricity, what are the potential consequences?

We haven't even got a rail line to our international airport and it's taken us a decade to build the worlds most expensive hospital and it's still not done. Nuclear power is a pipe dream.

IIs It really do the Worlds most expensive hospital? I do not believe that. I am fairly sure there was a big city in the UK that built one fairly recently and it cost a lot more.

Finland seem to have it down to a T. They have special disposal facilities for the little bit of waste there Nuclear power plants make.

Keep an eye out for the English boats with the nuclear symbol. They come very close to the island dumping the old glow in the dark.

won’t pretend to know too much about this, but seem to remember reading a paper which explained that nuclear wasn’t that feasible in Ireland owing to the nature of our existing infrastructure. I think the conclusion was that they we would be much better off importing nuclear from the Uk or France.

Do people know if nuclear is actually feasible in Ireland?

A drone strike would do diddly squat to a nuclear plant. All the nuclear "mishaps" in history pale in comparison to the deaths caused by the continued use of fossil fuels anyway.

If it is feasible in Finland it is feasible in Ireland. Whether we would want to do it is a whole other question.

Go and start asking for signatures on your petition. Start with your neighbours, and when they ask you where the Nuclear power plant should be, tell them that it should be built in the local area and see how many people will sign that form?

No matter how good or bad an idea it is to build a Nuclear industry from scratch is in a country our size with our Energy market, in reality, the project would be held up forever in the planning phase as objections start flooding in

Ireland would be much better off continuing with our existing plan. Use the wind and solar resources we have available to us, back them up with interconnectors and storage.

Nuclear has been the solution for years now. The comparison between Finland and Ireland was highlighted (as per the OP) by Phillip Boucher Hayes. Something he did not say was Germanyt decision to shut all theirs..

He also said a very true thing,,.something like we have been on the cusp of making a decision on climate for years but cannot seem to implement it.

You could substitute 'climate' for 'rail link to airport', 'Dublin Metro', etc etc

Nuclear will never happen in Ireland. Not because of its cost (thats never a barrier in Ireland) or risk factors. Even if it was cost neutral after 10yrs and there were no environment risk factors, it would just get stuck at feasibity and consultation stage for decades.

This is modern Ireland, not Finland. Meanwhile we do benefit from some French nuclear generated electricity.
