hi, im getting a 2014 520D in a few days time, afaik its the 182bhp model, not sure what engine in those ones exactally as im not too well up on bmw. Im currently driving a remapped 2013 2.0tdi superb 182bhp. obviously the bmw being automatic im going to see a reduction in mpg. but im just wondering, how economic are the 520D. the superb is great on fuel. i am considering a remap for the bmw. any advise is appreciated

The F10 520d is a heavier car so naturally it's going to be a bit less fuel efficient than the Superb. I had a few of them and was averaging about 45mpg of mixed driving and a bit higher on longer drives. Listen to the engine at idle for a rattle noise. Also check the service history for any indications that the timing chain was replaced as that N47 engine was quite notorious for the chain to rattle, stretch and break which will destroy the engine.

I don’t see why you are expecting better fuel economy? Its a bigger and heavier car.

He's expecting worse from my reading of it. Won't be a huge amount in it though

Sorry your right. I read it wrong.

Might be better on the motorway tho with extra gears? Is that gearbox 7 or 8 speed?

    I had an f10 and I can't remember! My e60 was a 6 speed my Audi A6 was 8 speed I remember those but not the f10.

I don't think it will be more economical to the point you'd really notice. My 8 speed Audi wasn't massively economical even on long drives.

1: Change the oil every 8k

2: change the oil every 8k

Ignore what the iDrive tells you.. change the oil every 8k.

And if you've just bought it. Change the oil, filter, and fuel filter.

N47 can be a problematic engine, bit but if you change the oil every 8k, you should be ok.

Did I mention to change the oil every 8k?

Km or miles? Thats like 3 or 4 services a year for a lot of people

    8k.Km

    Every 5k miles

Or don't, and find out where the "lifetime" timing chain lives

    Depends on driving patterns.
Ours lived in the city and long term was mid to late 20’s. Also a 2014 model.

Motorway was 50+ when being good.

same engine in 3 series can deliver 4.9 l / 100 km that was my average when I had the car. 5 er is obviously heavier but I would expect it to do 6 l at least .

Economy will be fine, much the same as what you are used to.

More important is service history, warranty work, recalls carried out (EGR), timing chain, galvanic door corrosion, etc. 2014 is LCI (facelift), pre LCI headlights can be troublesome.

If you are worried about economy/cost, F10 ownership may be an eye opener after your Superb if things go wrong.

    so update -

i got the car, and oddly, not drastically different on fuel, usually i get about 32 miles city driving in the superb manual, and the bmw auto, i get about 26. now, thats first week driving so that might improve. also theres an economy mode which would be better again

I wouldn't expect them to be a whole lot different on fuel, the BMW is only a little bit heavier and both 2.0 diesel engines. Right now you're hauling say an extra 10% weight around town which doesn't help.

At 50-80km/h they might be even closer, but at 120km/h+ then the top end gear ratio and aero dynamics might give one a consistent advantage over the other.

funny enough, i tend to drive the car now in eco mode, and its nearly getting better mpg now then the manual skoda.
