So a new discussion started yesterday. John waters announcing his intention to stand in the forthcoming European ele tonight. A couple of minutes and one reply later and the discussion has disappeared! What happened.

Waters is a crank and most people realise it. He ran in the 2020 general election, in Dun Laoghaire, and came 12th out of 13 candidates with 1.5% of the vote. Since then he's only gone deeper down the rabibit hole with his buddy Gemma O'Doherty.

Him running in any election is about as relevant as a Monster Raving Looney party candidate in a UK election. He's just there for some cheap publicity and he's not going to be taken seriously by many people.

The decline of John Waters has been quite sad.

Twenty five years ago he was arguably the best columnist in Ireland. Why he went the way he did I don't know, but it is very unfortunate and quite sad.

Hugh Linehan of the Irish Times has a good theory on people like John Waters. It's that, in the end, most opinion columnists go mad and train wreck themselves. That is because every week they are putting pressure on themselves to come up with unique and interesting takes. This often naturally leads to contrarianism and that in turn often leads to conspiracy rabbit holes.
