Anyone else find their grammar/spelling gone to crap?

I've noticed in the last 2 years a huge decline in my grammar and spelling, including very basic their/they're and bear/bare style mistakes.

It seems to be strongly correlated with my switch from laptop to mobile phone use for online posting, and I don't seem to make these mistakes on the now rare occasions I do use my laptop.

Anyone else notice a similar issue?

No, but English isn't my first language. I have learned to read English before I could speak the language. I do not need to translate, in my mind, sounds of the spoken language into text. "Their"/"there"/"they're" are just completely different words for me.

Been going downhill ever since I started posting on the internet regularly some 20+ years ago.

Every now and then I leave a verb or preposition out of a sentence or something weird like that.

No, but only because I do a ridiculous amount of business type writing for work each day. I have no choice but to hone my writing skills.

I work on a PC and write and review long reports relating to clinical studies most of the day, as well as writing business documents, some can be 200 pages long.

When I try to write a birthday card using a pen, I find I cannot write, can't spell .. I,ve totally lost the skill of handwriting. Even in the bank when I,m asked to sign a bank slip, my signature becomes a sqiggle, its not my proper signature.

Yes, since I got a smart phone. I used to be very good at spelling but I would make silly mistakes now if hand-writing something, and leave words out. I assume it's because of autocorrect on my phone doing all the heavy lifting.

I'm just really **** at typing.

When texting, eg as in posting on Boards, sometimes spellcheck turns my their in there or they’re etc, and I look back in horror at “my” error when in fact it is a sneaky spellcheck that sneaks in after my eyes have gone past that word. I get ms-related double vision doing close-up writing, so I’m terribly prone to not catching these and other typos. My intention is always to endeavour to use proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Actually I’ve noticed spellcheck has gone a bit crazy in past couple of years, the AI model is copying my own finger mis-typing.

It's refreshing to see this topic and read the posts of people acknowledging their spelling and grammar mistakes. Usually when posters on Social Media are corrected they are not very social with their replies to put it mildly.

My signature is gone to sh1t, even filling a crossword requires concentration to remember how to write the letters.

To think I could fill a foolscap page in minutes in school/college without thinking about it, it's a sad state of affairs.

Going to blame autocorrect on my phone/ Microsoft swiftkey .

Total farce have to keep switching it off and deleting and rewriting everything.

My posts here are a heap of disgraceful errors when I read them back and unless I magnify it I don't see it.

So I have to just keep editing my posts .

Then someone replies quoting the error ridden post and its mortifying 🤭

Apparently now the Microsoft bxxxard thing is the default keyboard so getting rid of my phone . Grrr.

No problems with tablet or laptop.

However my handwriting is terrible now as well . Lack of practice ?

And memory.... myself and oh have these guessing games to remember characters in everything we watch ..we keep forgetting names of actors and characters , and we know them ...its getting old I think .

Calling out a post that's hard to understand due to spelling/grammar is fine but there's also some horrible grammar natzis out there who have no business correcting minor errors

Very true, had to write on a whiteboard recently in a group presentation and I was stressing as I know my spelling has gone bad.

Defiently blame it on technology. I can type well but find handwriting difficult now.

It’s a use it or lose it skill. The spelling, writing and memory. Though it’s no surprise as the bombardment of info daily from phone usage (ramming) is shortening our attention span and making recall more difficult.

I am permanently irritated by auto spelling and so I never let it get the better of me .

But I do use it when I am unsure of the correct spelling and it is ,of course always right except for when it seems to be offering me a US spelling instead of the proper Charlie's.(z versus s -how is anyone to know?)

And I nearly always reread my posts at the end to double check for spelling errors.

It always has to be remembered some people are challenged by dyslexia and shouldn’t have to keep explaining themselves or stop participating in posting etc because of it.
