    Hi all,

I have changed my son’s name by common usage, and we have recently renewed his passport with the new name.

We are now planning to apply a Chinese visa for our holiday. As his name has changed, we’ll need to provide official documents confirming the name change from relevant local authorities. Do you know where we can get these documents?

In the UK if you want to change your surname you can do so by public announcement. We did it at our wedding by placing an advert in the local paper. Another way is to get a solicitor to witness a statement to the same effect. Peace commissioners may also be valid witnesses.

In short you must have made your intention to change your name publically available and you must have a document trail to show that you did so.

You will need this paper trail until the new name replaces all references to your old name in public documents, and you will need it for any Garda clearances throughout the whole of your life.

Thread moved to Legal Discussion as it seems to be a legal question you're asking.

You'll have to generate them yourselves. The usual thing is to execute and register a deed poll recording the change of name, and then you can get certified copies of the deed poll from the court where you registered it.
