Getting a license for a handgun in Ireland

How hard is it? For target practice! I assume quite hard if it was deemed that you had no good reason for owning one.

Only "Good reason" is target shooting, and to do so you MUST be a member of a target shooting range. Only 22lr handguns are allowed. Other than these conditions go and find the handgun you like, put a deposit down, and apply for the license. You'll have to put a safe in your home at a minimum, av small one should be enough.

Quite easy.

I have 2 currently and another going in next month.

You need a valid reason for one and member of a Pistol gun range is that reason.

.22LR only though.

Moderators are possible too. I have one of the 2 licenced for a Mod.

The only legally accepted good reason to get a firearms certificate for a handgun since 2008 is for target shooting at an authorised range, which in turn requires you to be a member of a range.

You might get if you can prove your profession requires one for euthanising large animals. As from the act, slaughterman,knacker, veterinarian. Farmer alone won't do it.The commissioner's guidelines also specifically mention a Cashman pistol in a joke of a calibre .32 for such a job.

Cashman was /is a UK company specialising in slaughterhouse equipment and up to the handgun ban in the UK converted some pocket pistols to single or two-shot capability. They fell out of use as nowadays vets will use an overdose of a prescribed drug even on large animals, and slaughterhouses will more than likely use a compressed air captive bolt killer.In short, it's just too much bother with paperwork, licensing, storage and more modern methods of dispatch for such a device to be held by any of the above three groups. For the very rare[once in a lifetime perhaps] occasions you need a distance weapon to dispatch a crazed animal on the loose a "cut slug" [google it] from a shotgun will take down a bovine. Or a call to AGS describing the situation and ask if the local ARU might drop by and dispatch it with a 12 GA shotgun slug is another possibility. Even a .22 will humanely dispatch a big animal if you know where to shoot it in the skull and it is down. Picture an X between its eyes and horns.[With downed deer the X is between the ears and eyes] Where the X intersects is where you shoot.

So to conclude.in reality, your only choice here is to take up a target pistol in a club if you want a,22 pistol.
