Tesla messed up my registration, advice please

I bought a new MYLR yesterday, the registered owner was supposed to be my wife and all the forms were filled in correctly by me. Went to tax it today and I’m down as registered owner instead of my wife. Rang Tesla and they confirmed on their systems that my wife is supposed to be registered owner and they would contact Irish delivery team to resolve. A few hours later I get an email saying out if their hands now and I need to sort it out with revenue.

Im worried now that the suggested solution will be to transfer ownership to my wife which would mean a 2nd owner on car which would impact us as trade in time.

anyone have this problem before and know of any solutions? Thanks

Keep it in your wives name. No issue. Move on

It’s in my name but I want it in my wife’s as it’s for her and I want her to be owner for insurance too

That's the problem, it's supposed to be in his wife's name but it's in his.

Happened my parents with KIA last year. As far as I can remember they got it sorted without much issue and it didn't go down as a second owner.

As far as I know dealers can deregister cars for a short while after registering so I'm sure they can also alter details.

Now I don't see how the name matters really as car insurance wise, your spouse or yourself can be registered owner with either one the policy holder.

It is tesla problem though so they should sort it.

Best thing is to 1. Get a letter from Tesla outlining their mistake and 2. get in touch with revenue and ask them if they can change the owner details and what they would need to this. I assume Tesla owning up to their mistake would be the first requirement.

My Brother bought a new car a few years ago and the garage registered it with a wrong county reg, the garage had to de-register it with Revenue and them register it with the correct county reg. Not sure if it’s the same process but in any event it’s something the garage/Tesla should be sorting for you.

It’s a non issue. Both will be insured.

I had the same issue with my wife's Cupra Born - garage registered it in my name. I rang Revenue in Shannon and talked to a very helpful lady who said to send a letter in to them (FAOed to her) stating the situation and asking for the registration to be reassigned. Was all sorted in a few days.

Strangely, I had also asked via Revenue's email or helpdesk or something. Got a mail from them after it had already been sorted saying it couldn't be done without adding an owner - so it does depend on who you talk to!

If it has not been taxed it is possible to cancel the registration in 'exceptional' circumstances, they do not define what exceptional circumstances are though

Well if tesla had wrong registered the car to a completely wrong name and it meant you couldnt accept the car, you can be damn sure they would figure out how to alter it with revenue.

It's a couldn't be arsed attitude from tesla I imagine but it's not a major issue.

I'd the same last month, registered in the wrong name. Phoned Shannon the lady just said send her the book and a letter for her attention. All sorted. No extra owner when the vlc came back.

Depends, if Mr Tw0nk bought and paid as it appears, it is a minor non issue, Mr Tw0nk is the legal owner of the vehicle, being the party that ordered and paid.

Is this an attempt to work around using a third party extension to drive "your wife's car" ?

If it can’t be resolved easily, you can just add a 2nd (correct) owner when you get the tax book. It’s not really going to matter if it has one or two owners whenever you go to sell it. It’s not a Ferrari.

According to Revenue, it's the motor dealer who has legal responsibility to enter the correct owner details.

They also refer to who the vehicle is "kept" by. So not quite legal ownership. Or at least not specifically the person who bought it.

There are a few legal reasons why the vehicle should be registered under the correct name. Speeding fines for example. Mrs Tw0nk could blast past a speed van, pay the fine and not tell Tw0nk about it. Not saying she would, but Tw0nk could be blissfully unaware of points mounting up on his license. 😁

Likewise for unpaid tolls etc.

Insurance can also be a problem. Some insurers require cars to be registered to the policy holder. This is mostly with fleet policies, but there could well be others.

Not really. Both parties have an insurable interest as are married. I have similar set up as named owner on my & missus car. Never had any issues with insurance...and intend to move around most years for best price.

When a ticket comes you can nominate a driver. If you are the registered owner you just declare who was driving.

if you don’t trust your spouse to do this. You have much bigger issues than a car registered in their name.

As for your second paragraph, not sure what you mean here. It was you who said "it (the points going on the husband's licence) could happen regardless". The only way that can happen is if they're nominated as the driver. Unless we're talking at cross purposes and I misread your post.

Yes I know it comes up as a second owner, but will it really have that much impact?

Most of the time I see two owners on a relatively new car, I pretty much assume it's a transfer from one spouse to another

I'm pretty sure most people use services like Cartell when buying privately which shows the ownership history AFAIK. So they might see two owners with the same surname and just assume they just transferred the car from one to the other
