Paddy's Day Parades: US invention.

Pipe bands: British Army invention.

Wearing kilts: a fun one. A 19th century reimagining of Highland dress now thought of in some quarters as Irish. Family Tartans are just as fake.

Irish Wolfhound: 19th century recreation of an extinct breed. A mash up of Great Dane and Scottish Deerhound that will struggle to live to the grand old age of 7.

Irish-Americans calling themselves "Irish".

Classic urban Irish pub: adaption of an English gin palace.

Full Irish: twist on Full English, popularised by the tourist industry.

Aran sweaters: product of a 19th century west of Ireland employment scheme, lots of faux folklore bunk attached to them, eg patterns help in identifying a body recovered from the sea.

It was a witty rejoinder on how Irish people criticize other people for calling themselves Irish, but have no problem calling other people Irish when it suits; Daniel Day Lewis etc.

Irish-Americans calling themselves "Irish".

It's just a product of how people identified themselves and distinguished themselves from other immigrants in the second half of the 19th century in America.

When an Irish person arrived in America they learned pretty quickly that no American cared of you were from Galway or Cork or Dublin, you were simply Irish.

And you used this new label to differencate yourself from other immigrant groups like Germans or Polish etc.

So in this day and age Irish Americans see themselves as American first and foremost but they call themselves Irish to distinguish themselves and their heritage from other Americans.

It's just a Gaelicization of the the north of England word "crack".

'Crack' rocketed in popularity/usage in Britain after its Gaelicisation.

'Craic' popularised the term 'crack' and brought it worldwide.

So much so that no matter how you spell it, people think it's Irish - including many Brits.

In the past the 'land of a thousand welcomes' had to do with hospitality.

Obviously if you are trying to organise mass migrations of people from all over the globe it is different.

'Welcoming the stranger' never meant relocating 10s of thousands and 100s of thousands of foreign peoples as permanent new residents.
