Battery warranty query

Is the warranty on an EV battery tied to the service history?

I've seen that the warranty on ICE car components is subject to a manufacturer certified servicing schedule but I'm having difficulty determining if this also applies to the main EV battery.

In summary, I'm considering a 2nd hand EV but the service history isn't complete. There would be approximately 30 months left on the battery warranty based solely on the registration date. I'd be a lot more comfortable if I knew that the service gaps wouldn't affect battery warranty.

It's Hyundai if that makes any difference. Thanks

Tesla - No.

Orher cars maybe. Toyota for example requires an annual service to maintain there 10 year warranty.

Many EV’a require a “service” but if this impacts battery warranty, I don’t know.

It shouldnt, unless part of those services has something battery related, like Kia/hyundai battery coolant change.

Thank you. It would be a 28kw Ioniq so battery coolant isn't an issue.

I might ring a dealer tomorrow to see if I can get a definitive answer....

I think you’ll be grant for the battery warranty tbh.

I also think you won’t have to worry about the battery in the i28. It was one of the good ones.

The wording in the ioniq 38 handbook is:

"you are not covered if the defects are judged as being caused by the failure to follow the requirements of routine maintenance and service...",

So assuming it's the same/similar for the 28, they would have to judge that the battery issue was caused by the service gaps in the past

You can use a phone app and an odb dongle to read the battery state of health before buying. Most ioniq 28kWh report 100% battery state of health up to 160,000km.

In terms of a warranty claim on the battery without service history the dealer claims from Hyundai Ireland and they can be picky for high cost warranty. So worst case you may be in for a fight, bringing them to small claims court or real court and getting technical experts to prove lack of servicing did not impact battery. They may claim a "battery check" may have detected the fault early and by not servicing on time the owner let the fault get worse to the point of a bigger failure. It's hard to fight warranty claims against a national brand. That said I had no issues with my UK import Hyundai although even booking the car into a service can have long delays.
