Hi Boardies, today I received a text message three minutes after it was sent.

Is there a way to prove the time of receipt?

But why do you need to prove?

SMS has never exactly guaranteed instant delivery. 3 minutes is not great but far from the worst I've seen.

I was only looking for some context, if you've a gripe with the Network you've no grounds for complaint as 3 minutes for an SMS although slower than normal would be acceptable. Delays could be caused by phones power saving settings, poor reception on either phone or communication between different networks. SMS is old technology and back in the early 2000's you'd be lucky to receive a message on the same day when the network was busy on days like New Years Eve especially.

I'm fairly confident most phones timestamp is the received time (at least for standard SMS), phones these days can have more advanced proprietary messaging features but they only work if both phones support the same.

The context is that I was sitting at my desk with my phone in front of me when the notification sounded.

You weren't seeking context, you were being nosey.

I opened the text and it was showing a time from three minutes earlier. So much for your confidence.

I have no gripe with the network.

The question I asked seems to have passed you by.

I'm basically saying no, you can never prove time of receipt because you can't even prove it was received. Nor can you prove, from your device, that the purported sender is actually the sender.

How do you prove that the notification sounded at the time the SMS was received? Depending on the phone, you might be able to dig into the SMS datastore to get the timestamp that the phone records as having received the message. How do you then prove that you heard the notification three minutes later?

Should be is not the same as will be.

What phone and SMS app are you using? On some phones it's simple to see the claimed sent and received timestamp, usually just a matter of long pressing on the message and selecting info. Other phones/apps it can be much more difficult.
