cut late yesterday evening, ground is actually very dry, the crop was extremely heavy and very green, tedding it this morning and thinking of bailing Monday morning, would that be too long of a wilt?

I'd bale 2mor mornin, this evening late would be better again after a full day of tedding out

I should be cutting mine today but Offaly hurling takes priority……. Hope to cut and ted tomorrow and bale Monday.

would only ever leave down for 24 - 30 hours

my contractor isn’t busy he will bale whenever I want but he thinks it would be better left till Monday, it’s reseeded ground that hadn’t been grazed and he thinks it will be soft

1st cut off of reseeded ground will be soft grass anyway imo

IIt'll be like rocket fuel tho😀

Great win for Offaly, nice to see them back competing and winning again

Another 80 baled up & stacked on the yard & a start made on the slurry.

Been really lucky here weather wise with the last few weekends, .managed to pinch 60-80 bales each time, helps lighten the work load & stagger the aftergrasss a bit

Got a field baled today 75 bales. Good quality stuff. Have another 13 acres mowed and rowed. Ready for baleing tomorrow.

I have excess bales this year. Had a guy that was interested in taking the bales and now pulled out. I am making the bales tomorrow as I have the contractor making my own bales as it is. Should I advertise the bales for sale now once they are made or wait until the winter months? I will have it better organised next time but was caught on the hop.

Mine all wrapped up. Very poor crop returning ~6 bales/ac. However, it would be super serious feed. Had wilted savage in the day after tedding and before the baler got to it.

The field baled today was short of 7 acres. Cut Thursday, rowed yesterday and baled this morning.

so roughly 48 hours of a wilt, would you usually wilt that long? How many bales to the acre did you get?

Hoping to mow tomorrow and bale Tuesday but getting mixed weather reports - the weather I'm checking is telling me it's going to be a dry few days with no sun? Midlands area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,352 ✭✭✭Seadin

Depends, but mainly it's there until the contractor can get to me. I usually try to clear it asap normally. It was cut Thursday evening about 5pm and baled this morning at 10am. About 11 bales to the acre I got.

Pit just done. Cover it in the morning after a bit of a roll. It was cut early yesterday and had got some wilt. 2/3's was grazed and happy enough with yield but delighted with quality. Probably the best grass to go in a pit in a long time around here.

Talking to the contractor and there is some differences with quality in the jobs they had done. Some of the stuff not grazed had serious butt to it.

Bales all done yesterday. 10.5/acre so happy enough. Not overly strong in parts where ground was wet over last few months. 26hr of a wilt and serious drying yesterday morning with the light breeze. It should be goodish stuff.

massive crop, 10 bales acres, nothing but slurry the end of last year, not grazed since end sep/early oct. Quality I assume will be shite but nice to have 80-90 percent of requirement for winter from first cut.

Knowing you don't have to look for it has a quality of its own

Stalin said about killing, that quantity has a quality all of its own.

He would have been a great cattle dealer.

only got mine mowed late this afternoon. Offaly hurling homecoming was on first so that was a bit more important!!

Only finished tedding at 8pm. Very little drying and bits of mist rain fell too. Need tomorrow to be better day as no sun or wind today really. About 11 acres and it’s all reseeded ground so it’s very green. But going to have to bale tomorrow regardless cos tues day onwards looks like being unsettled.

Bits of light rain promised tomorrow afternoon too.

Does the quality of grass silage drop much in days or a week ....its ready now but weather not good its either cut now wet or wait for a while hoping for a dry spell and next week not promising its a right pain

Poxxed lucky. Cut silage yesterday even week the 29th. Left it down until Saturday midday 7 bales to the acre. Monday evening we spread 30 units( I split tge application)to the acre PU+S as rain forecast Tuesday morning which came as well as Wednesday morning. Yesterday contractor spread the slurry, drop of rain last night again. Slurry spread with dribble bar so expecting 6-8 units/1k gallons.

Will go with another 20-30 units of PU in a couple of weeks. Or maybe I will try spraying on 15 units for second application.
