France - long weekend

I’m considering a long weekend break (4 days or so) in June and currently looking at places like Provence, La Rochelle, San Sebastián and a few other places around south of France or Basque Region.

Would love any recommendations around where to fly/how to get around or if anybody would favour some places over others. I’m leaning mostly towards Provence at the moment, possibly flying into Marseille (which I’ve heard mixed reports of) but not sure what to think!

June will be quite hot in Provence, which is great if you like the heat! You can get around on the train from Marseilles to places like Aix en Provence and the lovely towns between the two. Search "Marseille St. Charles" for the trains leaving there and it gives you the final destination and all the stops in between, some may take your fancy! It is such a charming part of France though (when it ain't roasting).

I like the Basque country, it is amazing maybe that's because it's not like the fires of Hell for me weatherwise! You can fly into Bilbao, half a day might do there to see the Guggenheim as it's quite industrial other than that really. Then take a very comfortable coach to Donostia/San Sebastian. That is one great town/city, great beach (la Concha) amazing grub (Pintxos) in the old town that is mad as a box of frogs after sunset. Great place. From there you can either get a train or coach to Bayonne, which is another great place that has kept its Basque roots and is rugby mad, if you're into that. On the way home you can fly from Biarritz and visit there if you want, although I wasn't that impressed as I found it a bit "up its own ass" and full of surfing wannabes, but whatever you're into.

Another place you might put on your list is the Aude region of Southern France. Fly into Carcassonne and either follow the Canal du Midi on a bike or boat (or train!) to Narbonne, or go South to the Pyrenees. Now that is one great trip.

I suppose it depends on what you want, how much or little time you have, and what you like. Enjoy whatever you decide anyway.
