My wife and I are in our early 60s. We are looking to rent/lease for one year in a small village. One bedroom and one bath. We will have to have access to public transportation. Our problem is that most realtors in Ireland are pushing us toward Dublin. This is not what we are looking for. We are looking for a small village. We come from a small southern town of around 1500 in Great Falls South Carolina USA. We can not move until August and would like to have everything arranged before arriving in Ireland. Our monthly budget is 900 American dollars but we could go as high as 1000. PLEASE HELP and ADVICE.....I would be greatly appreciative.

Not to be flippant but I've been in SC playing golf , beautiful scenery , the most courteous, friendly folk and a bargain to dine/drink in , why would you want to trade that for this place , don't believe the hype , some clown from lonely planet said Drumcondra was one of the best places to live ,IN THE WORLD ! He obviously wasn't around when the Indian & Phillipino doctors & nurses who keep our health service afloat were too terrified to leave the mater hospital because the local vermin had them terrorised , the men & women who look after these scumbags parents & grandparents , maybe Rathlin island !

Think you may need to supply a bit more information. Any idea which part of the country in particular.retirement ,work or just an extended vacation?.how do you mean public transportation? Some villages might have a single or couple of busses a day connecting to nearby city. A bit more information might be helpfull for boardies to chime in. Wish you luck with it. Down the south west here myself . Also include hobbies or interests maybe or nightlife etc

Definitely, more information required.Which part of the country? You want to be in a small village with public transport links to a town/city.Is your trip one way or 3 month holiday? Visas for long term looked into? If, holding Irish passports,no problem.Grandparents/parents Irish then apply for passports.

A budget of €826 to €917 is very tight in Ireland. You’d really be expecting to pay €1000-1200 per month in relatively rural areas at the moment. You might be able to find cheaper but it’s an expensive market - more sought after locations are fairly expensive - you’re talking more like €1500-2000.

The rental market in Ireland is extremely tight at the moment. Purchasing a property is far better value, especially in rural areas, but the rental market is a hot mess right now.

Also factor in that utility bills, particularly energy are likely much expensive than you’ll be used to.

1 bedroom places in small villages are rather unusual. Most small places don’t tend to have large amounts of apartments or small town houses, so you’ll probably be looking more at 2 or 3 bedroom houses.

Also public transport in such places usually isn’t usually particularly good - they’re very car centric.

While there are ‘Local Link’ busses, which connect but you’re often taking once or twice a day in many places, unless you find somewhere that’s on a busier bus route, or (and it would limit your locations a lot) has a train station.

You would need to focus your search a bit more too. There are a lot of differences depending on where exactly you want to be.

Pick a few counties. Decide what towns / cities you want to be in reach of. What kind of amenities yo want to be near etc.

Estate agents (realtors) tend to be very local / regional, so if you’re looking for a house in Sligo you’d be better talking to one in Sligo, not Dublin. This is probably why you’re getting pushed towards options in Dublin.

Also if you’re looking for value and quality, perhaps look at areas

www.daft.ie is the most popular location for property advertising and would give you a good sense of what’s available and the pricing.

(As per other comment further up the thread, unless you’re an Irish, EU or U.K. citizen, you’ll only be able to stay 90 days as a tourist - for anything else you’ll need to apply for an Irish visa.)
