I have norton 360 security and keep getting nagged to update this that or dother. I always ignored them ... until yesterday!! I agreed to use/install NORTON UTITIIES ULTIMATE for £7.05 ie 87 days to next renewal. I know it scanned PC and then listed all the items it would either update/remove. It showed a that said remove junk I selected it, then update drivers after update drivers it wanted another €45.00 so I exited.

This morning turned on PC and loaded email client, all my emails gone! Got to NORTON support " Yes we can try and fix that but €79.00 euro first".

I gave up, got my £7.05 refunded, cancelled my annual sub.

Is there anyway I can recover the lost emails?

data recovery specialist. This will be pricey.

no harm in asking your friends on facebook.

No harm in looking on YouTube to see if you could recover the emails.

Are you sure that the two events are linked? Did you try access the email account using a client on a different system? Were the emails downloaded and stored locally on that system, ie using POP3..? What client were you using? I'm looking at the Norton documents and I can't see where it would offer to clean up email at all...

Norton is a shell of what it used to be unfortunately these days, see many of the posts online about it, but I'm still curious as to how it deleted your email.

Its my own fault I was too dozy, when the error popped up onscreen when I opened windows live mail I should have had a good read but that's hindsight. That Norton utility gave some options and I think they first one was clear junk and I said yes. I stopped when they wanted more money. Norton wanted to access PC remotely and attempt to recover them but I declined.

This is what I have. The EM is WIndows Live Mail, I know its old but always worked. I then use 2 email accounts with webmail hosting ie Blacknight, and these accounts used to be with BT and had IOL.IE. I also have 2 gmail accounts added to WLM and these were untouched. I dont get many emails these days but too lazy to delete them and there was a few thousand. Not life shattering. I did not check emails last night when I put desktop to sleep

The emails I get are downloaded from webmail and Gmail and stored on PC.

I use win 10 that I updated from win 8.1

    I hope that makes sense.

Here's where WLM (Windows Live Mail) stores it's files.

Usually what you would do with deleted files is use a data recovery program to scan the PC and attempt to restore any files from that directory, except Norton may have deleted the email via the email client directly, in that case it SHOULD have moved them into a deleted items folder first. If that's the case then you won't be able to recover the files using the data recovery program... but as this was deleted by Norton then it's anybody's guess as to how it can be recovered...

I'm going to have a go tomorrow, no interruptions but ... may be a fruitless exercise.
