Means test question

I’m currently on Illness Benefit with a chronic condition and doesn’t look like I’ll be able to return to work anytime soon and my Illness Benefit is running out.

The Social Welfare advised I should apply for Disability Allowance. From what I understand this is means tested and my wife works and is on a decent salary. Does anyone know what the maximum weekly/monthly family income is before being above the threshold. Married couple with three kids if that makes any difference.

And if my wife does earn too much is there anything else I can apply for instead of this, or just sign for stamps?

Apply for invalidity if your eligible , look up invalidity pension on citizens information.ie , It will also give you all the info on disability

Thanks I’ll look into that. I heard Invalidity is very hard to get, is that true? I was reading info about the disability and could find general info about means and what’s counted but couldn't find any figures. I could be missing something obvious though.

Yes its hard to get , high percentage are refused but get it on appeal ,If you have an illness and cant work for a minimum of one year certified by your consultant and have the number of contributions required , you should apply its not means tested

Presuming your wife works at least three days a week, take her net salary and minus €60, and then get 60% of that figure. That is your weekly means. Take this away from your personal rate (which includes adult + children dependants) which is €532. Whatever is left is what you'd get per week from Disability Allowance. This does not take into account any capital you may have.

would I be able to ask a question .
when you are being means tested for disability will my spouses overtime be considered or will it just be basic wage ?
we also have 2 Childern under 12 how is that factored into the means test

I believe they ask for recent payslips, so it will be based on the wages on that payslip and in principle should include any overtime (they would count any and all income)

Your personal rate with 2 children under 12 is €478. You can use the above formula to calculate what your means are and take it from this rate to get what you would receive.
