A good old fashioned LA private eye series..

Private detective John Sugar investigates the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he unearths Siegel family secrets, old and new.

    Starts April 5th.

looks very clichéd, but Farrell is usually good value

Having said that I've just remembered he was True Detective 2 which was awful and which this trailer reminds me of...

I thought Dennis Boutsikaris was Al Pacino 🙈

I am getting Ray Donovan vibes and also I am the Night

Have watched the first 3 episodes and am really enjoying it.

I'm enjoying it but the episodes feel a bit short for a weekly drop… was just getting into episode 3 and it was over after 30+ minutes.

  • Might get sick of it by the end. Enjoyed the first 2, 3rd not so much.

Getting fairly bored of this after a few episodes - we get it, he is a good soul caught up in a violent world and may have taken one job too many (we don't need his minder to ask him this in every conversation) - its just all a bit too obvious.

I think the main character annoys me too much - he is casually catching flys with chopsticks, alcohol has no effect on him etc etc, is he a spy, superhero, robot or what? He isn't suave enough to pull it the slick spy routine, isn't hard enough to be the battle weary journeyman. Looks too worried all the time to be a man pulling all the strings, yet he seems to be playing a suave, battle hardened super spy. It's just a bit all over the place for me

I wonder is there more going on here than meets the eye, some of the phrasings in this episode about learning from movies... people trying to find out "what" you are.

So this is just my speculation below but will wrap it in spoilers tags.

Could Sugar be a guardian angel?

Maybe we are in Angelheart type territory.

Well holy fcuk that was a twist ending to the episode I would in a million years never seen coming!

watched episode 1 last night. Not sure I was that taken by it. The story is solid and looks like it could be interesting but I was very put off by the style. It felt like watching someone’s film studies final year project folllowing around a modern day film noire type character interspersed with 40s movies clips just to highlight what they were going for. I’ll reserve judgement til I’ve watched a few more but I fear it may be a lot of style over substance.

Im going to guess (genuinely) ....they are a cabal of aliens hiding in human bodies sent to observe earthlings but sugar has got a bit too close to humanity (gone native) and is getting too close to uncovering a conspiracy within his own alien ranks......

The fascination with movies, driving the corvette, msnipulating homeless people into watching said corvette etc

Am I far off the mark?

Michael Scott swooped in to save Holly Flax and quipped, "Sugar? I hardly know her!"

About 2 episodes in myself and my partner both said the same thing about who Sugar really was. I was very surprised to be proved right because I didnt think the show would go there.

After that revelation, I have a ton of questions about what Sugar's group are up to … none of them related to the 'macguffin' case that kicked this all off. But seems like it must tie back in or else why not just let Sugar at it.

Well that explains why he couldn't get drunk...that was really bugging me lol.

Enjoying this I have to say.... interesting to see where it goes next

  • That was the worst twist I've ever seen. This show is completely garbage. Acting is decent too which is a shame

I didn't really know what to make of that! Interested to see where it's going all the same.

I caught up with the last 3 episodes last night and holy moly 😃

That's what I thought at first too!

I was going to ditch this mid way but after reading here there was a twist I was intrigued to finish it to see what it was.

All I'll say is if there is a second season I most defiantly will not be watching it not even out of curiosity.

I just finished it. I liked it. Big fan of the blue corvette.

Farrell and Cromwell (however brief) were excellent.

I finished it this week. Not bad but the ending sucked. I’m not really pushed about a season 2.

I hope he's got a huge stash of the drug that he obviously needs to look human or he's going to stick out like a sore thumb if it gets used up. Of course, if it gets cancelled it won't make any difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,990 ✭✭✭squonk

Agreed. That also occurred to me and he’s now a lone wolf. From what I saw he was really good at what he did because he had a researcher. They should j leave it as a one and done but they won’t.

I've only just arrived at Episode 6 and ... ... I can't. I just can't decide if it ended with the greatest curveball or the worst.

I often joke with my wife that it'd be funny if we were watching some ... I dunno, random grounded family drama and it randomly & arbitrarily turned into a grisly zombie apocalypse show, absolutely out of nowhere.

This wasn't exactly it but damn close.

I think I had this quote in mind from the early episodes... the whole drinking shot after shot but not getting drunk had my spidey senses tingling:

"Never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside."

(From James Crumley who wrote some hard boiled crime novels in 70s)

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

I found it a bit dull, unfortunately. Watchable to a degree, but not really something I'd recommend.

Still, it did live up to its 'observe and report' thing.

It was by no means dreadful and I quite liked Farrell in it. But overall I found it dull and a bit plodding. If its renewed for a second season not sure I'll tune back in

Looks like Apple were sweet on a second season. (I'll get my coat)
