Separate Assessment or Separate Treatment

Hi, married couple here. I'm living & working in the Republic permanently.

Spouse is Irish but working and living in Northern Ireland and pays UK income tax. He lives in the Republic at the weekends. He has no income in the Republic.

I'm trying to understand the rules regarding separate assessment and separate treatment.

As I understand it we should opt for separate treatment for ROI tax purposes. But if we opted for separate assessment could I avail of his tax credits?

I'm getting the info from the link below but I'm a bit confused.

    Thanks.
