    Hi all,

A few years ago we got rid of the lawn and put decorative stones down in the back garden. The sub base is 804 compacted gravel.

We have since got dogs who absolutely hate the stones. We are looking for the quickest way get some kind of a lawn back.

Is it possible to get rid of the decorative stones, lay top soil but lay some turf on top of it or will the gravel stop the turf from taking?

Artificial grass is an option but with the dogs they like to dig so would be pissing in the wind with artificial grass

    Any other ideas welcome

It's fine to grow grass over 804 but the more topsoil you have the better it will grow and the easier it will be to maintain e.g. in drought conditions.

I'd guess six inches of topsoil would do it.

Wouldn't bother laying turf, seeded grass grows so quickly once the soil temps come up.
