I just bought a car from a small garage in Mullingar he was a really good sales man even after checking on cartell and seeing 10 year missing of taxing and cvrt he still convinced me that it was a good car and had had a lot of work done hence the reason for the price of the car being above average for the year. He gave me a warranty written on the receipt for 3 months engine and gear box. I wouldnt mind after the cartell check I asked for my refund of €500 back but he convinced me that all was as should be and the car was just lying up for years as the previous owner had two. The other part of the story is I have just found out that they are travellers so I dont know what to do now. The brakes are leaking the lights turn on and off and the odometer does not work so dont even know if the milage is correct. So any ideas what to do.

If the car has been recently serviced and NCT’d the fact it was off the road for so long probably isn’t a big issue. But I’d expect it to have a new oils, filters, timing belt, new brakes, new tyres etc.

You agreed to buy the car tho and there is nothing illegal about selling a car that was once off the road.

You do have consumer rights tho. Have you informed them of the issues the car has? Have you given them a chance to fix the issues before calling them dodgy?

Spend some money to get an engineer report on it.

Then, if this shows up faults that you were not informed about, request a refund.

You have 2 weeks to do this

You bought a car that was lying idle for 1 year or 10 years?

Cars dont have cvrts, do they? Was it sold with a current NCT cert?

It's actually 30 days. Didn't believe it myself, but there is a recent thread on it and someone got a refund.

Called "right to cancel". Seems it came in last year.

    what do you expect

You bought a piece of crap and you got a piece of crap, what's the surprise here

OP - I had to read your post at least 3 times to make sense of it.... There is a load of red flags that i cannot believe you didn't run a mile from:

    1. 10 year missing of taxing and cvrt NCT - WTF?
    2. He still "convinced" me that it was a good car and had had a lot of work done hence the reason for the price of the car being above average for the year - did he produce evidence of work done, ie, receipts??
    3. The car was just lying up for years as the previous owner had two - absolute bullshit!
    4. They are travellers so I dont know what to do now - who are you talking about? the previous owner or the guy who sold you the car??
    5. The brakes are leaking the lights turn on and off and the odometer does not work so dont even know if the milage is correct - did you not notice this when you did a test drive?

Closing this discussion because as usual no one is understanding just all want to get a dig in with sarcastic remarks if you have nothing to add maybe shut up and move on

What’s the reg of the vehicle? Plenty of Boardsies here will check the history for you and give you some advice.

If you’ve been sold a seriously defective, get on to a solicitor to help you get your refund.
