Arson attacks in city centre

A number of retail premises in the city centre have been firebombed this evening, Gardaí still looking for the fire raisers.

Hearing from people who are there that it might be members of our ‘new to the parish’ community responsible but we will have to wait and see. Thankfully nobody has been injured so far.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour - arson right in the city centre is so dangerous and reckless.

Rumours flying on the culprits - whoever they are - I hope they are swiftly brought to justice and do at least ten years in prison.

There are various rumours flying around ranging one guy to “a group of scumbags.”

Very hard to know what went on but some comments reporting that shops had to lock them out.

I was walking through the city centre at 6pm last night. I passed a Fire Engine outside the Lidl on Corn Market street. Police sirens were going off on Grand Parade and a female garda ran past me on Paul Street.

The situation in Palestine doesn't give anyone the right to walk into a shop and set fire to it.

The regular pro-Palestine marches/protests down there every weekend are ridiculous. 3 weekends ago the entire city centre was disrupted because of it - at the same time as the lights were out on the Kinsale Rd roundabout which was causing chaos (but explains why there were no Gardai out to manage the traffic - too busy watching this lot wave their flags).

The irony/history of what these people are supporting is apparently lost on them but the amount of leeway they seem to be getting is nonsense.

(and no I don't support Israel either - as far as I'm concerned they're both at fault and it's not our issue. We've enough here at home that should be warranting protests and marches).

It certainly doesn't but that's not how they think, supermarkets were attacked yesterday in Italy as well, for stocking Israeli food, Jewish owned or ones that borrowed from Israeli owned banks, all have been targeted recently.

At least the nutjobs behind the library protests are quiet lately. People have a right to protest peacefully but that doesn't give you the right to go setting fire to retail premises around the city. I'm sure the full facts about who was and what was behind this will emerge in due course.

You have to wonder at the ignorance of these people - particularly given the awful history of arson and fire Cork city went through.

I have no sympathy for them even if it is some sort of misguided “free Palestine” stunt.

That's terrible, I thought that library nonsense had died down. I hope the library management report any incidences of intimidation or criminal damage to books to the Gardaí. These muppets like to film themselves and post it online , so there should be no lack of evidence.
