NCT Fail for door sill rust

Brought a mk5 golf in for nct, passed everything bar the door sills were rotten, went around to garages who weld, best quote i got was €400 for each side so 800 all in, anywhere id get it done cheaper? Just need it to pass, dont care if its an average job. Also not planning to paint the new metal, just need the car for work.

How bad are they? I’ve repaired mk5 Golf sills with a repair kit from Halfords for €30 or something

Sills are a serious structural part of the car, they make up the main rigidity of the car lengthwise, filling them with putty is not a good idea nor will it pass a retest

No idea about the safety aspect but its solid enough that you can hit it with a hammer and therefore passes the NCT.

I’ve passed retests on two separate occasions for rusty sills on mk5 Golfs using this kit.

Passat estate 2008 failed due to rusted sills on both sides any suggestions appreciated

It's nowhere near as strong as steel, it would be extremely dubious from a safety perspective

It should not pass a retest, the manual requires a continuous weld seam on repaired areas, to prevent exactly the repair you are suggesting
