Michael Lynn Jailed

5.5 years for stealing 18 million. I was reading thinking he'll do a handy bid. He'll be considered a low risk prisoner and get a lot of temporary release and the like. He more than likely has a few quid squirreled away somewhere too. Then I remembered he already served 4.5 years in a Brazilian jail. Got me thinking why the hell he fought the extradition at all. Surely to god he would have preferred to take his chances back here with our light tough sentencing than spend years rotting in a Brazilian hell hole. Strange case. He'll probably do 3 years and the most of it spent in the training unit or somewhere cosy. What do you think? I see he says he wanted to return home to face the charges. Haha. Yeah Mick. You wanted to come home when you were arrested. You should have put yourself on a plane before that mate.

It was Martin Nolan sentencing so I'm surprised he didn't get a suspended sentence. I'd imagine he took into account the 4.5 years served in Brazil.

It's amazing the sentences he gives out for robbing his wealthy friends and the slaps on the wrist he gives to actual rapists and murderers.

why I am not surprised to see clown Nolan again linked to the case. Every time there is a ridiculous sentence for harsh crimes- its the Clown Nolan time again!

I'll be honest. I'd happily do 3 years in an Irish prison for 18 Million quid. Even if he has 5 of that sown away somewhere he will be ok.

I think, had he stood trial in 2010/2011, the sentence would have been a lot harsher. It was different times. And I think this played in his head when he refused extradition - he probably thought he'd be a poster boy for the recession and get at least 10 years.

That said, you'd have to say the sentence would have been longer if he hadn't spent time in a Brazilian jail.

I wonder if he's thinking that if he had only come home five years ago, he'd be out of jail now. His decision making seems to be...not the best.

That sums it hope. I mean Brazil. Wouldn't be known for it's hospitable prisons. Especially for a gringo. And imagine what the natives did to him when they found out he had 18 million stolen. FFS.

I definitely wouldn't fancy spending time in any Brazilian prison, but I'd be curious to know what his one was like.

I'm sure some are worse than others and of course his defense are going to play it up like the hell hole we all imagine.

He has the money well washed and re-routed at this stage so. Caymans comes to mind. It's not under the mattress with this guy anyway.

Thomas Byrne got 16 years with the last 4 suspended for very a similar crime. That was in 2013.

I can see this sentence being appealed. Nolan is playing silly beggars like Paul Carney used to, purposely ignoring sentencing precedent only to have it overturned on appeal.

Hopefully the state does appeal it. It should be closer to the 15 than the 5.5.

He was extradited from Brazil in 2018 after spending four-and-a-half years in a “hellhole” prison there. In the first trial, Lynn told the jury the jail was essentially run by prisoners, and he witnessed the beheading of a young gay prisoner.

As part of the extradition agreement with Brazil, Lynn asked to be given credit for the prison time he has already served.

He was given credit for the time he spent in prison in Brazil.

If he didn't fight extradition he wouldn't have been in that "hellhole".

So being in prison in Brazil was his own fault so why should an Irish Judge give him credit for that.

The disability allowance is all part of his ploy. Make it look as if he is on skid row.

At the end of the day that is how it works.

You can't add years because he is not likeable.

There was also a lot of poor management by the banks that allowed him getaway with it initially.

Probably does have something squirrelled away and probably a very decent pension built up, but any hope of a luxury life and hanging out with a certain type of group is gone - he'd simply attract attention that others prefer not to have.

I disagree. An ordinary Joe may have convinced the jury better.

It will be interesting how the next part dealing with confiscation of assets.

I wouldn't be surprised if they located all accounts and properties - gardai are actually quite good in this area.

From what I've read, the value will exceed what he took due to the growth in prices.

Unfortunately that's the system and far too many people game it. Ideally the fees should be a charge against you and stay against you for life.

Latest is reports of money laundering. This may see further charges.

How on earth was he able to get multiple mortgages on the same properties?, did the banks not check if there was an existing mortgage on a property before giving out a mortgage?
