Passat or Golf

Looking at changing my car- have a 2013 Highline Passat, 1.6 with 300k on the clock. It’s NCT until 07/24.

I have my eye on a 2016 Passat, Highline with around 200k on it, 1.6litre diesel for around the €13k mark from a dealer. Looks lovely and clean etc and ticks all the boxes.

Then I also am looking at a 2017 golf, 2 litre and 150bhp, same mileage and price as the Passat.

I drive around 500-600km a week, mostly on country roads. Do the 2 litre engines give trouble? Is it too powerful a car for the driving I’ll be doing?

Was in the UK last year and drove a petrol Golf for the week, was 1.4 I think? Anyway, it was smashing to drive, really smooth and plenty pep in it. A Quick look online shows the petrol models are a good bit dearer though.

What can I expect for my car on trade in, have been offered between €3k and €5k and which car do ye think I should go for? Or should I look at a 1.6l diesel golf?

2 litre would be similar reliability as the 1.6. Maybe even slightly more reliable.

Its definitely not ‘too powerful’. Its just feels a lot more refined than the 1.6

Me personally I rather a Golf, but if your doing 600k a week then the Passat is probably the better option for you. Both will have radar cruise control which you will love. I couldn’t live without it now.

Ya I have used it on a T Roc. It’s ideal on motorways. Is there much of a difference between the Trendline, Comfort and Highline? IMO the trendline in the Passat looks awful, but don’t really notice it as much in the golf, except in the Highline golf for the seats maybe.

1.6 in the bigger Passat is pretty underwhelming. The 2.0 litre is much nicer to drive in it.

Would 6 previous owners on a 2016 car raise a red flag? The dealer says his uncle, dad, brother etc all had it for various times over last few years.

That's a red flag for me. Owner changed every year, were they trying to avoid tax?

You do big miles and you are buying cars with high kms/ miles on them ?

if thats all your budget allows - could you not go for lower mileage skoda or older / lower mileage car ?

Ya the Octavia’s seem a similar enough price for a 2016. And they just seem more basic, but I could be wrong. What would be considered low mileage on an 8 year old car? Thought 200k would be about average?

no definitely not on a 2016 car , i just dont see the sense in a person who does a fair mileage paying €13k to buy a car that they will have put 300k kms up on in 3 years time ??

i would be looking for something from a less desirable brand with a fair less mileage and a similar price

Always thought Mazda was reliable had a 121 back in the day, back to the drawing board.

Dont envy anyone car hunting have been at it twice in last 3 months for myself and herself.. have a passat and got her and Aqua 2016 for 7k 1.5 hybrid can highly recommend them might not be comfy enough for 600km per week.

If you like VW then look at the alternatives to see if you can get a better price, so Seat/Skoda etc

Just be careful with the Skoda's, I felt the seats are terrible on them when I had a few of them as garage cars over the years around the years you are looking

As in the alloys aren’t great? I don’t really do long distances. Just lots of short 10-15k trips and a 50k trip each way 3 times a week on average

Sorry I assumed it was mostly motorway driving if your doing 600k a week. Those alloys are Chinese 18 inch with very low profile tyres, they just wouldn’t be great to live with comfort wise.

No that's the same as your current car. Newer model didn't launch until mid 2015 so that white one was probably just left over old stock.

Why not look outside the usual VAG default?

Your model ran from 2011 to 2015. Its the same as the one you linked. The one you linked is probably just higher spec so your confusing it with a different model.

Would I be stupid going for a Qashqai? Lots on DoneDeal with low enough mileage and within budget. Had a Mondeo years ago and swore never again!

Quite reliable drivetrain on the Qashqai but it will feel quite small and cheap compared to the Passat

It is. Its the newer model and yours is older. Its a 152 so late 2015

Ok someone said yesterday that the newer model only came out 2016. I posted a link to a 2015 white passat and they said it was same as mine but it’s not.

The white one is clearly the same as yours. Its an R Line so maybe thats why your getting confused. Look at the interior it is completely different to the new model.

Going car shopping today. I drive 5k to work each day, then maybe a 20k trip return, twice a day. Then maybe twice a week a 130k round trip. All on country roads. Plus obviously other bits and pieces. On average doing 500-600km a week. Looking at these 2 cars later. I just want something that is fuel efficient as possible, doesn’t “give trouble” and will hold its value for resale in a few years.

lower mileage qashqui car would be my pick , you doing a decent mileage - other x2 cars - too up on kms - just asking for trouble

I think you need to also consider that the cheapest examples won’t be the best examples.

The bumpers on that first Qashqai are a very noticeable different colour to the rest of the car. I know with a colour like red, perfectly matching paint on metal and plastic can be difficult but I'd be shocked if they came from the factory like that. Looks like a poor repair job to me.

Nha its clearly a different colour, look at the photos of the rear of the car. Not that it matters much on an 8 year old Qashqai

I don't know, maybe I'm just fussy with my cars but 13k is still a lot of change to be dropping on a car with a poor matching colour. If it were bangernomics money then yeah makes feck all difference but 13k is not bangernomics money and it's not as if a Qashqai is a rare find.
