Jr purchased a used vehicle today, tax is up since December 23, does he have to wait for the dealer to process the transaction on their online facility & receive his new VLC before he can tax it himself, I’m presuming yes

    Thanks

He needs to wait for ownership to transfer over to him but not exclusively until the new VLC arrives. He should be able to track it on motortax.ie

The motortax pin will usually be the last 6 or 7 digits of the car's VIN once the new VLC is processed.

Yes, he has to wait for the dealer to put it through and no, once it's changed he can tax online/in person while the VLC is still in the post.

Keep checking here and when it shows the change of ownership has occurred it can be taxed online.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

Ye, should have added that once its transferred to their name, they can also fill out the 'Forgot you PIN' online with the correct details and get the PIN that way, or tax in person at the local MTO the old fashioned way.

What’s a reasonable amount of time for it to take to show up online as transferred, car was purchased last Tuesday so say three full business days ago?

    Thanks

If it was posted in, then it could take about a week. Also, just because the car was purchased 3 business days ago, does not mean the form was sent by the previous owner at that time.

If it was done by a dealer online, it is practically instantaneous, in my experience, and should show up the following day.

Is this system in place to prevent people from taxing a stolen car?

Not really, you can tax a car immediately but the disc will be sent to the registered owners address, so its best to wait until the transfer of ownership is processed so the disc gets sent directly to your address.

So it’s finally shown up now online, it says transferred to new owner on 8/2/24, notified to the dept on 19/2/24, Vrn awaiting issue,

can he now go through the forgot my pin method & tax it?

    thanks

Yes, using the exact details he entered onto the VRC it should work now. Or the VRC should arrive in the post in the next few days. Or it can be done in person at the local MTO.
