Massey Ferguson 390T Gearbox Range "Dreaded spring"

Hi anyone any advice on changing the spring in the 390t 12 x 12 H M L Range box, best place to split it etc

You need to split it here (Don't attempt to split between main box and rangebox): Get a workshop manual is the best advice if you are doing work yourself.

Are you sure it's the dreaded spring and not a broken gear stick, sometimes they crack at the roll pin and flex giving similar symptoms

Fingers crossed it's the Gearstick. If you lift up the leather boot at the floor you'd see the gearstick flex at the pin just below floor level.

Both issues are common so could be either, later models were fitted with a stronger spring and earlier models are likely to have been repaired with the stronger spring already so hopefully.
