MF 290 ignition light staying on

Ignition light is staying on when the key is turned off on my MF 290, I after getting the alternator done but the problem still exists.

More likely to be a faulty switch than the alternator or a short in the wiring.

Have you a multimeter to do a continuity check on the switch?

Do you mean the battery light is staying on?

Take the small wire off the alternator and see does the light extinguish

Yes the light goes out.

Fan belt slipping? If you rev engine will light go out?

I take the first post to mean light is on when engine is off?

Light on with engine running and key off would be normal operation.

Light on with engine off and key off is probably a faulty switch.

Don't fully understand - why would you have key off with engine running? MF of similar vintage to OP here and when you turn on key to start light comes on , then when alternator kicks in light goes out ( this light not going out is what I take the OP to mean). Probably faulty wiring as you say but for me anyway faulty wiring usually means light doesn't come on in first place

Opening post says with key turned off. That's what I'm trying to understand.

So if he turns off the key on a 290 the engine keeps running and battery light will come on, no idea why you'd want to but it would be normal behavior for the battery light.

Or battery light is on with switch off and engine stopped then the switch is probably faulty.
