Notice period

I have handed in my 4 weeks notice today as mentioned on my contract. It was advised I must provide this on my contract even within my 6 months probation period. I am on month 5.

I have emailed my managers and one has come back saying they may be able to shorten this period (I want the pay) so I don’t want it shortened. Can they decide to shorten the notice period even though I followed their rules and stuck to the notice period advised in my contract?

If your contract says to give 4 weeks notice and you have given 4 weeks notice then that is the end of it. If they want rid of you before the 4 weeks then they put you on gardening leave...but still pay you up to the end of your 4 weeks notice period.

Generally, no they can't. Notice periods are two-way. However, are you sure they aren't offering you gardening leave, or buying out the remainder of your contract? That would be where they pay off what you're owed, but don't require you to come in to work

Payment in Lieu of Notice, where you were paid, for the remainder of the contract and left immediatly.
