Implications of closing Vodaphone Landline Account

We have decided to cancel our Vodaphone landline (with only ADSL 5MB BB) as we have two mobiles in the house and a microwave based 50MB broadband alternative. Our Vodaphone bill has been circa €45/mo (approx €1000/yr gross) but as we haven't used any of the landline services for over 6 months we consider it to be a total waste of money and hence will cancel the account.

It will be another 2- 3 years before the National Broadband Rollout (NBR) will reach us.

By cancelling our account we are presuming that we will lose our current phone number (and possibly our circuit in the exchange). Does anybody know if that cancellation will have implications for us signing up for the NBR in the future - ie do we go to the end of a long queue that we would avoid if we retained our landline ?

You can keep that number by porting it to a VoIP provoider like irishvoip.com if you really just want to keep it - do a minumum payment a year to keep the number active.

NBR, shouldn't matter if you cancel you old telephone line - its based on house/eircode and not if you have an old telephone/POTS line.
