It is what we want. We (66% homeowners) vote for reps (politicians) to protect our most valuable asset (house) and will use every tool to safeguard its wealth (object to nearby planning sites etc) to ensure it keeps rising in value. Simples.

Look at a satellite map of Dublin city centre and there's huge areas of low density within 10 minutes walk from O'Connell street. Look at Citywest and Cherrywood and there's massive amounts of high density houses and apartments being built, the Luas is already at capacity and we are adding thousands of new units to the end of each line. There's loads of new estates being built up the mountains and out into the countryside, where there's feck all buses.

We should be razing large parts of the city from low density to modern high density but instead we are increasing urban sprawl, COVID showed us how few people live in Dublin city centre yet we continue to push people out of the city who then need to use already full public transport. A 15 minute city is easier to do in a city than in the suburbs
