Hi everybody

I’ve seen some really cool pics posted online the last few days of the Welsh mountains taken from Wicklow and of the Irish mountains taken from Wales. I was surprised that the coasts were visible to each other notwithstanding the right atmospheric conditions.

are these photos real or are they just mock ups.

I have't seen the recent photos you're talking about, but - in ideal conditions - you can certainly see some high peaks in Wales from elevated ground in Wicklow. It's not the coast of Wales that's visible - it's high mountains inland that jut above the horizon.

The area of the earth visible from any point is called the "viewshed". There's tools you can use to see the viewshed of any location. Here's the viewshed form Bray Head as an example:

the viewshed is marked in red. The horizon is the curve out in the Irish Sea, but you can see some high ground in Wales that rises above it. You'd only be able to see these in very good visibility. If you look to the north, you can see that the Mourn Mountains in Down are also visible (and about as far away as the areas of Wales that can be seen).

Visit that link, click on any point on the map, right click to get the menu, and select "viewshed layer".

There's a better tool than this that I came across before, but I can't find it now!

Real. You can see for yourself with the right conditions, I have. Ideally afternoon, sun in the west, and low humidity.
