Herselfs car is a 2012 qashqai 1.5 dci. I owned it before her, but over the last 12 mths the car has gone through 3 wiper motors. I had the car for about 3yrs before her, didn't buy it new, the wiper motor never burned out when i had.

So bought cheap and expensive wiper motors and same results, they burn out. So basically they burn out cos they get wet but for the life of me i cant find out how the water is getting in. There is holes in the panel that the wipers are attached to but theyre the manufacturers holes so ive taped them up thinkin its gettin in that way but no. Water still gets in. Cant find any other possible leaks.

This ever happen anyone, anyone any experience with it or any ideas what i can do to prevent it happening again?????

i know that vid ive used it to replace the motor. My problem is that ive gone thru a few motors in 12 months cheap and expensive. None last. Im trying to figure out how and why water keeps getting into the motors. Ive cleared the drainage holes on the scuttle under the bonnet so car isnt hilding water. Had one idea was to cut a tupper ware box and place over the motor to keep it dry but worried about it melting when motor gets hot under load.

Do you still have them? I wonder if they could be stripped to see if there's any clues to the cause of the problem.

Are they actually doing from getting wet or is it another issue? They are relatively water resistant so would want to be getting soaked to be causing a problem.

Are the spindles seized and burning out the motor from too much load?

Back in the days of the garage yes waterlogged slosh slosh was common when leaves blocked drainage holes. That small rusty arm is under the motor at the bottom so should not allow water inside. They usually came with a rubber cover to stop splashes entering the shaft.

Silicone sheet could be wrapped over motor and zip tied in place. Old one should be rusty with loads of water .Maybe address more protection for around the spindles and dont be using wipers on a dry screen.

so anyone any ideas to prevent it happenin again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,830 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

The pics you posted look like the unit has been submerged in water for a long time. There has to be drain holes clogged that are causing this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,847 ✭✭✭larchielads

no drain holes clogged nothin else in that area where its situated is water damaged like that

I don't know what to tell you, but that cast metal looks like it came out of the bottom of a lake. You might be mistaken, painted surfaces won't show that sort of corrosion.

Are you replacing them yourself, or is someone else telling you porkies..?

Those things should run underwater for years. Maybe post a pic of the connectors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,847 ✭✭✭larchielads

replaced the last one myself. Cant post pic of connector from car as new motor currently in place and workin fine. Can post pic of connector connection point from old motor.

just had look at connection point on old motor. No sign of water damage at all. Looks clean.

In a car that is 10/11 years old check the rubber washers where the spindles come through the scuttle, they may be cracked or the nuts needing tightening, there is also the possibility the spindles are worn allowing water in and also making them stiff to rotate, get someone to run the hose on the windscreen with the bonnet open, this should show you where the water is getting in

ive changed out the wiper arm under scuttle so hopefully if the spindles were the issue theyre not now. Good idea about runnin the hose with bonnet open i could try that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,847 ✭✭✭larchielads

so i ran water down the windscreen with bonnet open and looks like water is getting in where the scuttle meets the windscreen. So popped out to halfords for a small tube of clear silicone and put some where they meet. Will try water again tomorrow to see if that solves the issue. Gonna leave it dry for a good bit before testing again

so the silicone seems to have done trick, tested with more water, time will tell fingers crossed
