House insulation recommendations

Hi there. I'm recently bought a mid terrace house in Dublin 12. It's one of the old council houses but with a flat-roof, 2 storey extension to the rear. The BER is basically as low as it can be, and the house is freezing. The downstairs is fully open plan, including the stairs, so heat just disappears. Can anyone suggest what the best course of action for insulation would be? We had all the windows refitted when we moved in and removed the old back boiler heating system and radiators. It is currently heated via electric radiators and a stove fireplace.

I've read very mixed returns on cavity wall insulation, is this something that would actually help? Would replastering internally make a big difference? External wrapping would require neighbours on both sides to lose a chunk of their gardens, so that's not an option with the read extension. Any advice would be great!

Have the house tested for the dominant heat loss mechanism and go from there.

Put up External Insulation where you can (front and back), organise yourself and go for 150mm rather than 100mm. Consider changing flat roof, in any event insulate that. If you are not worried about space loss use 100mm Internal Insulation inside. Triple glazed would have been a good option for the windows. If it is possible insulate the floors as well.

    Good Luck
