The whole country has problems with teens who know the gardai probably won't bother arresting them for antisocial behavior since the prisons are full respect for the law is at a all time low .they have to concentrate on serious crime like criminal gangs

I got on the LUAS earlier today at Georges Dock heading into town and I noticed 6 Gardai beside me on the LUAS. Later I was getting the LUAS at Jervis back to Georges Dock, and when the LUAS stopped at Bus Aras stop next to Store St Gardai station, 5 Gardai got on the LUAS.

Are the Guards preparing for trouble before tomorrows match?

Settling of old scores. Not random recreational violence, dublin crown is safe.

Ireland would be regarded as a county with a good educational system internationally.i would not be in favor of spending more money on teaching Irish .there was an article about Dublin in the independent newspaper about Dublin .it says we need to have more gardai on patrol on the streets . Move more hostels around the city instead of just the city centre .

Hostels are located all over Dublin in different

    areas right now

hostels don't have signs on them. They are usually just large 3 storey buildings

.he said move rte headquarters to o,connell street

I don't see how to that would help

We need 1000s more gardai in all citys in Ireland

    I don't think it's a government priority right now

or maybe it's hard to recruit more gardai

There were Gardai all over the city this weekend. The place was flooded with them.

I walked from Connolly Street up to George's Street and back. I'm not being hyperbolic when I saw almost every Street had a Guard on it.

that was only for the England match , it was the same for the Europa league final , guards pulled in from all over the country - perfect time to commit burglaries or rob some business in rural ireland when there’s a soccer match in Dublin

I listened to pat Kenny show they talked about Dublin guest said Dublin is generally safe but gardai are fed up arresting teens they go to court nothing happens it's unlikely a 17 year old would be sent to prison he talked about woman in a car waiting in traffic someone broke the car window and stole her handbag

Woman in Tesla saw something bad happen it's recorded on video man committed crime gardai did not follow it up Tesla records video automatically around it

Dublins getting worse because business (and therefore politics) sees theres money to be made.

They're cramming every gobshyte into the place, and saying fck the natives, the long term residents who've been here for decades.

Those taking the profits will make Dublin into one big industrial zone, and then retire somewhere leafy and peaceful.

Overdevelopment of Dublin, and under-development of other towns. Meaning the smaller towns get nothing locally, and small town residents end up having to commute to Dublin (or pay exortion rent), plus Dubliners get their town ruined by constant noise and traffic and overpopulation and associated crime.

Is Dublin really safe? Not from me fein capitalism anyway.

Big company's want to be in citys where there's a wide range of workers .the economy is booming people are coming here to work .I don't know if the government is planning to encourage more development outside Dublin .

Too big a project to take on regarding transport. We have a neolithic attitude towards public tasnport in this country for some reason.

If we turn Dublin into a cramped shthole then of course its going to be unsafe.

Look at London and Paris these days. Richer economically, but less safe with disimproving atmosphere.

A 3rd year student had a lucky escape from a creepy weirdo in his car outside Lidl in Baldoyle last week.

It's a good thing that the young girl had told her mum about encountering this creep. I hope that she will be more vigilant in taking steps to avoid him next time.

Surprised this wasn't posted on this thread yesterday

    https://www.newstalk.com/news/garda-recruitent-a-real-crisis-that-needs-addressing-immediately-gra1-1762911

In a Nutshell, despite a big recruitment drive over the last 2 years, the number of Garda has only increased by 66 in 6 months.

To add further insult to injury, in April 2025 there is going to be a huge number of Garda eligible for retirement having completed their 30 years service, having started as a result of the recruitment drive in the 90's

Finally, it would seem that a lot (dozens is the word used) of people completing the Garda training are not taking up their posts.

Looks like a mess is on the horizon.

    Note:
In June 2024, there were 14,064 Garda.
In December 2023, there were 13,998 Garda
In November 2022, there were 13,907 Garda.
In March 2020, there were 17,750 Garda (according to Aodhán Ó Ríordáin)

Do Gardai get a living allowance for the higher cost of living in Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,298 ✭✭✭Tenzor07

This came from a 10yr+ old post on boards so the allowances would have increased today:

    BASIC
    + shift allowance
    + rent allowance tax free(€4,160)
    + uniform allowance
    + boot allowance
+ away from station for the day allowance(airport passport guys + other moving prisoners from x to y)
+ overtime(easily availible, perhaps reduced now)
+ handy days standing around croke park (€200euro from what i'm told)
+ scheduling a ten minute court appearance on your day off knowing that you'll get paid for the minimum 5hours you get under union agreements that state you must be paid this minimum time regardless of your actual time worked(been told first hand about this)
+Garda credit union(cheap loans how many apartments have you rented from Garda i've been in 3 apartments all owned by garda in the last 5 years, 3 friends have garda landlords)
+health insurance for you and married partner
+ if put on clerical duty(9-5) an allowance to compensate you for the allowances your missing by not working unsocial hours
+ while on holiday pay an allowance to cover the overtime/allowance you could have potentiallly got if you weren't on the beach basically unsocial hours work allowance even though your not in
+ plain clothes allowance, if your plain clothes garda to buy your own clothes
+Gaeltacht Allowance and Aran Island Allowance
    + retire @ 50 with full pension(lump sum+payments)

a lot to unpack there , you obviously have a lot of issues with gardai and have a poor understanding of the issues lol

Sure we will start from the bottom will we ?

Retirement at 50 *if you ve joined at 20 with a pension just above SW so you might have to keep going till 62

There are less that 20 members attached to Islands or Gaeltacht areas and carry out all sorts of other duties because of the isolation and their acquired skills

most plain clothes Garda are well on the retirement route and not being replaced, nor are their skills . people in the position temp get no allowance or training and can be left there for years or rotated regularly

holiday pay is a standard thing do you not get it ? or dont you like the fact that garda can take a holiday (some times)

Clerical work is done by Garda Staff not gardai mostly , some times done by injured or pregnant gardai on a temporary basis

health insurance is the most expensive on the market and is paid for entirely out of members pockets, can cover partners nd kids.

garda credit unions ar subject to the same rules and regs all credit unions, you've lived in 3 apts in 5 years all owned by gardai ? what a incredibly bizarre coincidence , almost entirely unbelievable some would say :-)

courts service schedule court siting and court lists and if you actually knew what you were talking about you might understand that solicitor's, barristers and defendants have a hell of a lot more say in when cases take place and how they progress. but ya dont do ya :-) people live getting to the ccj for 1030 after a night shift to find out the solicitor wants an adjournment coz some scumbag in in magaluf for 2 weeks and only informed him this morning.

you know who pays for non public events in Croke park or where ever ? no gardai no concert and you can go watch osais or who ever in Manchester, you clearly haven't a clue about that so i ll move on

Overtime has to be worked you get that right ? still policing just extra on top of the 48 hour week ? depending on area most do 2 extra shifts. thats 6 12 hour shifts and 2 days off , limited to between 50 to 100 hours a month in most places . Overtime is required because of the massive shortfall in people to actually do the jobs. some time not getting done at all now , there was shortfalls in members at many events this year and will be going forward, there was a marly park concert cancelled as i recall

garda are stationed at the ports and airports , get no allowances , if you get sent across the country or stuck some where where food or facilities are not possible you "might " get after two forms and a month approx 13 euro subsistence. more if your away over night. no an uncommon thing in the world

the boot allowance is 2.90 , again not uncommon in the public service in most country's

    ditto unform its 4.39

Same rent allowance regardless of were your living and working

If you work , or work in a job that doesn't compensate you for working nights and weekend you have my sympathy

anyway to answer the question that you didnt , no there is no higher living allowance for the higher cost of living in dublin where the vast majority of new people are sent

Here's an example of someone not reading the part where I clearly stated: "This came from a 10yr+ old post on boards"

And immediately jumped in to accuse me of "you obviously have a lot of issues with gardai and have a poor understanding of the issues lol "

Remember, attack the post not the poster..

did you not read what you copied and pasted before posting inaccurate rubbish i mean ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,298 ✭✭✭Tenzor07

How do I know it's "inaccurate rubbish" unless a serving member of the Gardai such as yourself posts up a response.. Obviously not a Detective Garda..

So there is no extra recompense available to Gardaí stationed in Dublin when many new Gardaí end up there? How does that make any sense? No wonder recruitment numbers are so low.

More police is all well and good but it's a prison we need.

There needs to be extra tax credit s for gardai and nurses working in Dublin. Dublin is way more expensive than other parts of the country

Theres a headline recently some trained garda recently resigned before taking up their job

We need more gardai on the streets but we also need more prisons built

There was a man on newstalk he owns a cafe on the quays in Dublin. He said there's constantly

open drug dealing outside his cafe every day

He rang up newstalk to complain about it

He says the gardai he see,s are doing there best

    iin a difficult situation

We're heading down the same path as London or any other major European city for that matter.
