How to sell 162 Octavia VRS - private vs dealer

    Hi everyone.

I'm going travelling for a year in about 2 months so will be looking to sell my car before I go. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience recently on this - I don't know if it will be too old for a dealer to be interested? In which case Donedeal is the way to go I guess.

I've been looking at Donedeal and Carzone and the prices vary quite a lot too so hard to know what to expect for it. Some seem to be optimistic to say the least, but maybe I'm underestimating the value. There aren't a huge amount of VRS's around 2015-2017 so maybe that helps.

I did sell a car through Donedeal before but it was a long time ago and was only a 3k car so a bit different to this - obviously a bit more risk involved in a private sale here.

Car is generally in good condition with 126,000km. I'm based on Galway by the way. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

You could take pics of it and send it out to crowds who give cash for cars if you wanted a quick sale, there’s no obligation to sell and you’d get a good idea of its value.

    Petrol or diesel?

Sorry, should have said in original post.

    Diesel, manual, 184hp

Thanks, good idea. Think a couple of the dealers in Galway have an online tool to load up details and photos also so might do that too anyway to see if they have any interest.

Try sell it privately and if it doesn’t sell then you can sell it to a dealer before you go

Honestly I don't know how much to ask for. As I said I'm seeing wildly different prices for similar cars - anywhere from 14k to 21k for roughly similar, even though most have higher mileage than mine. Will have to take a proper look over the next few days but was hoping for around 15k. Not sure if that's reasonable or not.

As suggested above think I'll try get one or two quotes from dealer or cash buy sites to give me a baseline.

15k sounds ball park- I would register on Škoda vRS Irish Facebook site as you could get a sale there too

If you have somewhere secure to store it and don't need the money why sell it? You'll need a car when you get back and having a car which you know is good is better than buying something when you get back.

€16k is a lot to have tied up in a car when your going travelling..

First quote I got back was €14,750 so in the ballpark alright. Seems to be decent interest from the dealers I contacted so hopefully shouldn't be hard to shift it!

In that case I'd say pop it up for 16,500 then and should sell for 16k handily if in good nick and you have service history.

a VRS is one of the easiest cars to sell tbh, especially now that it's being discontinued this year.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Just wanted to give an update for anyone who's interested - I sold it privately for €17k in the end. Happy with that.
