Sun holiday for a family of 2 Adults and 3 kids

We’re finding it practically impossible this year to find an easy going 10-14 day sun holiday for 5 of us without paying extortionate costs. Last year we rented a house near Malaga but the costs of that have gone through the roof also.

Has anyone had any good past experience of a place for a family of 5? Somewhere with a big pool for the 3 amigos and plenty of coffee and restaurants/cafes for the elders. A bit of a historical old town would be the cherry on top.. once it’s not €200 per cherry 😆

    Thanks for your help!

You could try Lake Garda with Eurocamp. We stayed in Camping del Garda and Bella Italia several times. Easy access to Venice and Verona and the campsites are great. We’re a family of 2 adults and 4 kids! All grown up now but it was the most affordable for us over any number of years.

    Have you considered Turkey?

Only issue would be to consider reviews of where you are staying regarding the Russians.

But if you are looking at renting a villa it may not be such a problem.

Would definitely consider a Eurocamp type holiday, through one of the campsite companies or direct with the site itself.

Fly drive can be expensive but unless your chosen site is on a bus route or close to the airport you won't have much option.

Lido de Venezia might be an option. Most of the sites along the lido are served by bus from Treviso or ferry & bus from Venice.

South of France - fly into Nice - have stayed in Esterel near St.Raphael which was really nice with St.Tropez, Cannes & Monaco accessible from there.

Few sites along the Costa Dorada with options to fly to Reus, Barcelone or Girona - Reus airport & La Siesta Salou could work.

We never booked a car. We never felt that we'd get the use out of it. We always looked for a site with reasonable access to public transport. You can fly to Verona or Milan and get a train from Milan to Lake Garda or a taxi from Verona to the sites I mentioned in an earlier post. Similar with a site near Barcelona. If you chose a site near Nice it's similar.

What I liked about Lake Garda was Gardaland for the kids, and Verona and Venice for everyone! We got a match in at the San Siro the last time we were there which was incredible. Milan is an hour and a bit away on the train, and the trains are very inexpensive.

The Eurocamp website is great for info about the sites and the accessibility to public transport.

Same here. Its the price of flights that has been the blocker for us booking anything so far this year. We book around the school holidays and pay a premium usually, which has been doable. But this year it is ridiculously expensive, more than double, for the same dates that we have booked for the past 5 years. Sign of the times. There are still good bargains in off peak travel if you are flexible with the months.

I would second Turkey. We went last year and it ticks all the boxes. We stayed in an all inclusive hotel but there are plenty of Resturant’s close by for dinner in the evenings as we preferred to eat out. The hotel was on the beach and had some water slides on-site. And the animation team were excellent. Lots of activities for young and old to take part in and if you are not interested in taking part you won’t be hassled. The Turkish Lira is quite weak so the local prices are very reasonable. We also visited the local water park which was in walking distance of the hotel and a full day at the park was cheaper than two hours at the aquatic centre in Dublin. It was our first time in Turkey and we will definitely go back again in the future.

We were a family of two adults and four kids so fairly tight for cash when the kids were young. I used book flights as early in the year as possible. As I wasn't too keen on taking the kids out of school I would try to book as near to the end of June as I could. The schools will probably finish this year on Friday June 28th, so you could probably get a good deal on flights on one of those days coming up to June 28th. We found that the campsites had ok prices in June too, definitely before mid July when the English schools finish.

What was the name of the place you stayed at? I am trying to convince my wife to go to Turkey on the family holiday this year as we usually go early in the summer- May/start of June and weather not always guaranteed in some of the European places we have gone before whereas I don't think it will be as much of an issue in Turkey. The all-inclusive places do seem good value in Turkey from what I have looked at so far but where you stayed with the water slides on site and local water park does seem right up our street, thanks.

Hi. Could you tell us the name of the accommodation please. Also looking at Turkey this year. Mid July 8 to 10 nights, 3 kids, budget approx €3500. Or any other recommendations in that price bracket!, I’m open to all places!

    Thanks!

I totally get the struggle of finding an affordable family holiday. Have you considered the Algarve in Portugal? I went there with my family a couple of years ago, and we stayed in Albufeira. There are lots of family-friendly villas and apartments that are reasonably priced, especially if you book early. The area has beautiful beaches, plenty of pools, and a charming old town with cafes and restaurants. Plus, it's less crowded than Malaga.
Another place we enjoyed was Westgate's Branson hotels in Branson, Missouri, US. It's not a sun holiday spot, but it's super family-friendly, with lots of activities and great service. It has everything you are looking for. It was one of the best hotel experiences my family and I ever had.
