Hi I have a feeling my car is showing the first signs of the clutch failing.

Any idea of the rough cost of a clutch replacement for a 2017 BMW 3 series 320d

    thank you

Indy probably in the region of €600. You would want to be seriously considering the flywheel as well though.

If you are in Dublin I can recommend Gearbox Expert, fair price and won't mess you you around.

If the DMF has to be changed along with the clutch it could get pretty pricey.

Depending on which brand you go for and what your mechanic charges per hour you could be looking at about 1k on average I'd say. But don't quote me on that.

Had clutch and flywheel go last month - cost 1,500. VW with diesel engine - was told this matters re amount of labour.

Did you go main dealer though for that price. I’ll definitely be going Indy

Unless there’s huge mileage on it , I’d be asking for another opinion before you assume its actually the clutch, it would be rare failure on a 2017 320d , unless it’s chipped . Plus if it is going , early intervention will not necessarily save you money , so in other words ….drive on .

There is 168000 Km on it. Would you reckon it would be unusual at that mileage?

Im just getting a judder type feeling when I release the clutch taking off in 1st gear. Not always though, just intermittently.

i was just presuming the clutch was on the way out…

Possibly clutch or dual mass flywheel, however, could be just an engine or gearbox mount too , or indeed a drive shaft carrier bearing. As an old time mechanic friend of mine says , let it Dee-velop, won’t cause more issues. Also you might get lucky and it could wear through the judder phase or disappear in drier weather. Alternatively fire away and throw the new clutch and flywheel in , not the end of the world on a valuable car. RWD makes labour simple .

Ah yea I’ll drive on and see does it develop over the next couple of months. Due for a service in March and ask my mechanic to have a look at it then. Thanks

I would try a BMW Indy for appraisal

Yip. And if you want to get the parts yourself, try SC Auto Parts.

Stephen's prices are great for clutch & flywheel kits.

Hi. I have a VW Golf 1.6L Diesel Automatic DSG. It's 2010 and has about 225,000 km. I noticed something was up with it and a garage said the clutch and flywheel needed to be replaced. I have rang round and got quotes of €1,900, €2,000 and €2,500+ (VW main dealer).

A lot of quotes seem to be less/in the hundreds, is that because they are probably manuals? The car drives fine, you just know something is up with it. Should I get the clutch and flywheel replacement at c. €2k, or keep driving it? I have no immediate plans to buy a new car, maybe in 2 years time. Car is in perfect condition otherwise. What kind of guarantee should I be asking for? 12 months? Is a clutch and flywheel a significant big job? P.S. this is not an issue the NCT picks up, and p.p.s I (clearly) know nothing about cars.

Dont let it go beyond a certain point as it can leave you stranded if the clutch stop biting all together. You will definitely know when it is near though.

……..as Shoog said above, don't leave it too long. I had to get clutch and flywheel replaced on Audi A6 recently (152 reg with about 120,000 kms on it). I was surprised it went but did notice it on the way out over time……I left it and got stranded. Wasn't too far from home but still an additional pain to have to get it towed etc.

Cost EUR1790 in the end……..I rang a lot of places and they were all about the same. Avoided main dealer as I knew they'd charge far more. My advice would be to get it done asap.
