Audio tape is actually making somewhat of a resurgence - last year hitting sales volumes not seen since 2003. It's mainly the hipsters, and their "borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80s", as James Murphy from popular beat combo The LCD Sound System once opined. You could be on to something.

Well since starting to listen to Tubs everyday I feel I am a bit of a nerdy hipster.

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

They should get a 5 year old to do the audiobook, would perfectly match the standard of writing.

Yeah, the column is written (and edited) with the target market of the IMOS in mind. It’s not Tubridy’s “true voice”.

It poses an interesting question: if Tubridy were to do a book about London, would it be just a straight anthology of his articles (like Hunter S. Thompson’s “The Gonzo Papers”), a more in-depth autobiographical retelling of his adventures (like Thompson’s “Hell’s Angels”), or even a fictional tale “inspired” by true events (like “Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas”)?

For a simple notion, there’s a lot of possibilities.

Fear and loathing and (exorbitantly) high wages.

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Tubridy and Noel Kelly in a red 1973 Chevrolet Caprice Convertible, a boot full of pharmaceuticals, heading to cover the London Marathon for Virgin Radio?

“We were somewhere around St Albans on the edge of the city when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive. . . ." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Blackheath. And a voice was screaming "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"

Then it was quiet again. My agent had taken his shirt off and was pouring beer on his chest, to facilitate the tanning process. "What the hell are you yelling about?" he muttered, staring up at the sun with his eyes closed and covered with wraparound Spanish sunglasses. "Never mind," I said. "It's your turn to drive." I hit the brakes and aimed the Great Red Shark toward the shoulder of the M25. No point mentioning those bats, I thought. The poor bastard will see them soon enough.”

I jest, of course! See, I can join in the playful banter too. The gentle ribbing.

But in all seriousness, there are interesting possibilities.

Thread completey derailed by Gregor + Bobson. Nice weather today lads. Great to see Radio Caroline celebrating Sixty Years on air. Life is short. Best regards, ec...

I’ve mates who worked for the original Virgin Radio (now Absolute Radio) and Hunter S Thompson shenanigans were the order of the day back in the 1990s. Not sure if the current Virgin station has the same relaxed approach to HR!

Tubs and Noel would be more likely to be driving round in a Megane convertible, hyped up on jelly beans and Cadburys chocolate.

In fairness to Bobson he has admitted to being paid to derail the thread by Tunridy’s manager and has posted proof of it too.

Sorry, E, but I was asked about Tubridy's potential future endeavours, I did repeatedly say that wasn't my bag, and I was pressed for off-the cuff opinions regardless. Not everyone is going to reply "He'll be face down in a ditch in Slough in 6 months, broadcasting to rats!", although that would get a lot of "Thanks".

Odd that everyone else is allowed all the tiresome Alan Partridge gags, and I'm not allowed a little levity in-between the facts, but I realise I'm on the wrong side of the narrative some times.

For what it's worth, I believe the Boards Radio Caroline anniversary celebrations are in full swing here, and I certainly wouldn't do anything to impede:

I’d say some of those old school Caroline types may have opened up the doors of perception in their time.

Tubridy cuts a very pathetic figure these days. But he’s getting what he deserves. A sinful boyo suffering in the limbo of Virgin Radio, beaten like a scurvy dog and shoo-ed from his homeland. He is neither wanted or remembered on these shores.

To be fair my old college class mate (The BMG) from Ballyer my dear man: (AND WITH SINCERE RESPECT TO YOU AS ONE OF IRELAND'S BEST JOCKS) HR there at London Bridge HQ do not give a flying (F***) other than to "protect the company" and in doing so they are protecting a company who hired a PI to inform interpol to hunt down Chris (Cary) to an Auckland fine dining restaurant just as he was about to sign the deal to buy an entire network there of radio stations

(They let Chris finish the steak he had just tucked into. He died in 2008 having been persecuted by Murdoch for a good segment of 25 years of his life.)

The newsreader on Chris Evans show mysteriously quit this morning. All the radio producer roles at Talk TV (Radio) have been re advertised internally. Graham + Piers have quit. Something's up at "the top o the tower"

Make no mistake who is in control and how fast Tubridy will be taken to the exit door by security staff at News UK HQ when the decision is made to end his failed run there. Gregor, Bobson nor NKM nor his mammy nor any of his alleged Irish psycophants / fans will be able to save him.

Ok guys, this has taken a somewhat sinister and disturbing twist, and I’m going to bow out. I’ve no skin in the game, but I certainly don’t want to contribute negatively to anyone’s life.

Best of luck to you all.

Are you??????? Of what significance does my being ON or OFF the air indeed alive or dead have to the bearing on this conversation and thread? Keep on topic there Del Boy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 267 ✭✭Enda Caldwell

Thank The Lord!!! And on Holy Thursday and all how poetic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭TheBMG

thanks Enda, but I suspect you’re barking up the wrong tree there as I’m a number of years older than you and was certainly not one of Irelands top jocks. Noel Kelly never returned my calls but I’ll happily take the compliment ☺️

Nor am I a Tubbs-hater but having caught the show again during the week I’m just not getting it.

A previous poster mentioned Tubbs had invested in podcast kit sometime back and wondered if he brought the home studio over to London.

No need for that; a couple of hundred quid on gear (not of the Hunter S Thompson type) and you’ll get a decent sounding podcast. I still think this is what Tubbs will end up doing in the medium term.

He’s not in a bad place. Hes made his money.

Just means more for you - after all you're admittedly on Noel's greasy payroll Dognutt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭TheBMG

I read this as ‘Noel’s greasy doughnut’ and now I’m scarred for life

I feel we should start a new thread: People Ryan Tubridy has been compared to.( Mostly by Gregor 🙂) So far we have

    1. Gay Byrne
    2. Terry Wigan
    3. Alan Partridge
    4. Leo Varadkar
    5. Hunter S Thompson
    6. The Beatles 😂

Well on researching your comments and Stillorgan posts I could be forgiven for thinking you are who I think you are!!!

Sure, he's made his money. He has made-off with the money would be a fairer statement to make.

My name can come with every health warning am really not bothered by that.

To see some truth posted here would be so refreshing. Rather than fantasy, lies, trajectory, bias and rhetoric.

personally I believe the planet is secretly controlled by Satanic lizards from outer space who survive by consuming adrenochome harvested from small children. They’re being helped by the Freemasons as well as Zionists, the World Bank and the EU in a plot to cull most of the planets population and to enslave the rest of us.
