He was paid the full amount until he quit the LLS in May 2023. He would have been on the reduced amount until his contract was terminated later that year. I would assume that his contracts ran from one summer to the next to cover a full season of the LLS which is September-May.

I’d just like to know on what exact date they stopped paying him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,461 ✭✭✭RoTelly

No, we found out that he had 3 to 5 year contracts, and we knew long before.

Remember he didn't collect his loyalty payment from one contract RTÉ when they published the top ten earners. They made the mistake of taking the loyalty payment from the 3 previous years when it had not been put on in the first place.

This was why RTÉ where holding off publishing the top ten on a year to year basis, for example Noel Curran when he was DG produced 3 years of figure after he'd held of for 2 years, 1 of the years he produced was a year early, and by spreading the loyalty fee across 3 years he was able to show he had reduced the figures in each year, rather than seeing a spike in a presenters pay in any one year.

For example when Pat Kenny exited RTÉ in 2013 he was given this exit / loyalty fee. In 2013 he would start his new show in September on Newstalk. RTÉ gave him €728k or €91k per month*. That figure was release in 2016 along with 2014 and 2015s figures.

This allowed RTÉ to suggest drops since 2008 and a drop between 2015 and 2013, and no one noticing that Pat got a healthy pay cheque in 2013, along with his new earnings from Newstalk.

    https://www.rte.ie/documents/about/final-rte-top-ten-highest-paid-press-release-table-dec-2015-final.pdf

NOTE 2 *: PK Media Services earnings for 2013 include earnings for presenter services provided for the period. Also included is an end of contract payment contractually agreed in 2008 and payable on the completion of a 5 year contract in 2013.

*that Pat was in RTÉ everyday from his last show on Radio 1 until starting on Newstalk. Anyone know what date his last Today show aired on Radio 1?

And just to finish off my point in 2001 when RTÉ reluctantly agreed to publish these figures they insisted on a gap of a year from public e.g. 2001 figure would be produced in 2003, this they said was because of yearly contract negotiations. Simply put RTÉ didn't want people know about loyalty fees built into multi-year contracts. AFAIK just before the scandal broke Joe Duffy secured a 3 year deal, convenient right?

The next thing that was very apparent early on in the programme was how traumatised the lads seemed even after the passage of 20 years. One or two showed what seemed to me like traces of PTSD, while one or two would clearly benefit from therapy (and I make both points in the kindest way possible).

As they recounted their initial joy of passing auditions and getting to appear with Gay Byrne on The Late Late Show (do you remember the infamous dance?) there was self-deprecation and self-knowing eye-rolling but soon thereafter, thing started to get gradually darker.

Is there a nicer guy in the business than Donncha O’Callaghan? Former Munster and Ireland player, he has branched out to the world of broadcasting and more recently, author. On Monday, he joined me on the radio in London where we talked about Ireland’s win over England the previous Saturday (thanks lads, I could hold my head high in London last week!) but we also talked about the joys of being a dad.

    https://extra.ie/2025/02/09/entertainment/ryan-tubridy-why-i-think-boyzone-should-go-to-therapy

Why does he feel that he has the right to say that they need therapy? Just seems like a desperately rude and invasive statement to make. He had a run-in with Boyzone when he showed the footage of their audition on the LLS. Just comes across as being a cheap shot from Tubridy. How would he like if someone else in the media suggested that he needs therapy after his Oireachtas Committee appearance?

Tubridy very coy and shy about the role of the manager in Boyzone. Maybe Tubridy has some manager issues too.

I do recall there being something of a mini-furore at the time of their last appearance on TLLS as it had been agreed in advance that “that” clip wouldn’t be shown, but Tubridy thought it would be “a bit of craic” to humiliate the boys. When he suggested/threatened to play it and subsequently played it Shane Lynch could barely contain his anger. Were I Lynch and the lads I’d have just left tbh, but I don’t blame him for his outburst - he’s clearly very upset and angry.

This was the behaviour of a bully, nothing else. Only a narcissist would want a cheap laugh at someone else’s expense like this.

It was also extremely unprofessional of Mr. Tubridy to air something which had been agreed in advance wouldn’t be shown.

Is he really so superficial and uncaring that he’s forgotten about this incident? The article is written like he’s never met them, never laughed at them, never took part in mocking them. I doubt he’s forgotten, it’s more a case of he doesn’t want to confront his own lack of “kindness” here. Either way, his sympathy for them in today’s piece rings a little hollow.

If he had penned something like “Watching the documentary I understand now how tough they actually had it, and I realise my own prank when they were on my show wasn’t in hindsight, very funny, or nice. I took a cheap shot at their expense and tried to lampoon them - which wasn’t very kind. I can only apologise now and will in person to each of them when I next see them.” I’d have some respect for him, but this article is just more bandwagon-hopping (Boyzone having a revival in popularity at the moment on the back of the documentary) and (as usual) just lacks sincerity.

How do you think Mr. Tubridy would react if the next show he was a guest on showed a clip of him saying “yes my salary is enormous but it doesn’t affect my soul”?

Tubridy is probably upset that Keating and Lynch managed to crack the mainstream U.K. market in their solo careers which he seemingly can’t

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,065 ✭✭✭yagan

Within the lofty firmament of Irish show biz heights I reckon Tubs has more people who distrust him than not. That example of playing the LLS clip when he promised he wouldn't shows a serious disrespect to people who put themselves out there, whereas Tubs career seemed very much gifted. They owed him nothing but he needed them to fill a segment.

I doubt Paddy Keilty would risk damaging his brand with such twofaced betrayal, whereas Tubridy probably thought "you have to suck it up because I run this gig!".

All of the items so perfectly staged… even the subtle placement of the bookmark.

Chances are, he's probably not reading any of these books, is he?

ANd not watching the rugby, he's not into sport at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,476 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Look at the spine, not a single crease on it. Even a book read only as far as the bookmark would have some creasing.

ANd he's such a mega reader, that having one book on the go isn't enough for him. He needs to be reading 2 books at the same time.

I wonder how a no-name former irish rugby lad turned tv presenter ended up on a london radio show, he must have a great agent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I am not sure Lynch has cracked the UK market. Keith Duffy has, he spent a few years "acting" in Corrie. He might still be for all I know.

Awh to be fair to DOC, he is actually a great kids TV presenter. Not so great on breakfast radio or Candid Camera.

Thread title used to be, until yesterday:

"150KTubs - future career in Virgin Radio and other soulful pursuits".

This reflected the fact that the thread was not just about his radio show, but about his other pursuits such as the podcast, and his 150k promise.

Was there a reason for the change? Just curious.

Edit: Saw the feedback thread, and have posted my question regarding restrictive thread title.

Book spines on shelves are the most wonderful work of art. Is getting an author to sign a book with a red pen an act of rebellion?

Now talking about Taylor Swift and being a Swiftie. Utterly vacuous discussion.

...Felicity Jones… actress from Rogue One, and currently in The Brutalist.
She has come a long way from since starting out on TV in The Worst Witch and British period fare like Servants, Northanger Abbey.

An actress from Star Wars Rogue One meets the RTÉ Rogue One.

Perhaps in hindsight I should never have turned down that headline writing job in the tabloid press……

Oh I’m quite confident I could, but it wouldn’t likely be very kind so I shall keep my witticisms to myself on this occasion.

I feel sorry for the cheerful looking young lady driving a branded vehicle with Mr. Tubridy’s face on it however.

Genuine question on the vinyl wrap/decal (or whatever it’s called) on the car….though I’m sure the tech is available to make those mostly transparent I do recall in the not too distant past seeing the Gardai testing windscreens and windows that were a little tinted - how does this differ? Just asking as I’m not au fait with these things (not that I’ll be wrapping my car in anything!).

It's fine on the rear. Vans for example often don't have windows at all.
