Gender Balance in Irish Govt

Was just looking at the make up of Irish Parliament. The following roles have never had a Female incumbent.

Taoiseach

Min for Finance

Min for Transport

Min for Foreign Affairs

Min for Housing & Local Govt.

Shocking stuff, what does this say about the Irish electorate.

The electorate don't decide the composition of the Government.

Each individual voter gets to cast their single transferable vote on the ballot paper which lists the candidates in their constituency.

About the electorate? Nothing.

About how governments are formed? What difference would it make it the minister was male of female as long as they can do their job?

I’m not a fan of gender quotas for their own sake; however, for representative democracy, in government and in leadership positions at commercial and public organisations, I think it is often necessary to have a truly representative sample of the voices and views of citizens, constituents and consumers/customers.

How is what we have now not “truly representative”? We have a very functional democracy, not just made up of political parties either, independents are in the mix.

22% of TDs are women.

27% of senior ministers are women.

30% of junior ministers are women.

Women are over represented in the make up of our government.

That's both shocking and disgraceful.

We have Oireachtas mandates for TD elections and the EU mandates that 40% of NEDs at listed companies are women. That will eventually trickle down. While some would say that political

parties often choose no-hoper candidates, I suspect more subatantial women candidates will consider standing where in the past they may not have done so.

There is truth in what he says, there is also a lack of interest in politics.

Look at any canvassing team between elections, any local party org, it's nearly all men and when it's raining its always nearly men.

It's says nothing about the electorate.

We don't vote for who plays what role in Government.

I really do find it odd that some people like yourself see Gender more important then experience and skill when considering people for roles in the workplace.
