New Bus stop erected outside house

Hi All

My sister lives in a semi detached house with 1 meter front garden on a relatively busy road in a seaside town.

There is on street parking which has been used for more than 50 years by the residents.

Yesterday evening she came home there had been a new bus stop sign erected outside her house.

There was always a stop opposite the house but it was at a public park on the unoccupied side of the road, but now they have modified the winding the bus route so the bus is going the opposite direction. The route is served by double decker buses.

Questions:

1. Can Bus Eireann simply erect a bus stop like that or should there be some planning process?

2. Is there a right of appeal?

3. Is it safe to assume that they will soon be marking the road to prevent on street parking?

Removing the parking would have a detrimental effect on the value of the house and also it's arrival would bring both bus noise and potential anti-social elements.

I dont think you have any comeback. A new bus stop was erected 50m on the same side of the road as my aunts house about 7 or 8 years ago. All of the residents lost their parking in front of their houses. There was no compensation and a few people with nothing to do but hassle the authorities all day every day were trying for months. A cycle lane was built there during covid.

Public road, so you have no ownership of the road and the authorities can change how the road is used at any time.

Having said that, it can certainly be worth you time to get in contact with the council and see if they can perhaps make some alternative arrangements, like more on-street parking nearby, etc.

They do do that sometimes when new bus stops or cycle lanes go in, but of course no guarantee.

Also if you want to search online for government legislation, you will see that bus poles are exempted from planning permission.

They didn't lose "their parking", as parking on a public road isn't owned by them. We seem to have this belief in us that someone should be entitled to store their private car wherever they want. My house has run out of storage, should I be allowed to store a box of my stuff on the side of the road?

As for OP, I'm not sure but I don't see why bus stops should be associated with anti social behaviour or noise, especially when this stop already existed just on the other side of the road. If you're actually going to try to fight this, just use the parking argument. However, that's unlikely to work for the reasons in my first paragraph

People using the public road to store their property or an actual dedicated parking area?

That’s my point, why should they be different? Like Cork City Council rejecting a bike box in a driveway as it’s ugly, but it would be fine if it was a car

Not necessarily, though having a bus stop nearby certainly would make a property more attractive.

Anyone who uses buses will be familiar with the cigarette butts, half empty coffee cups and other detritus deposited at bus stops by careless passengers.

So while having the convenience of a bus stop is a bonus to the neighborhood the householder who is "hosting" said stop might think they have drawn the short straw.

Pay parking, yes; residents' permit, no. The resident permit documents state clearly that simply having a permit does not entitle you to a place to park.

Both forms of parking are on a first come first served basis.

If you have a residents permit you don't get a dedicated space but are entitled to park in a designated area subject to availability.

If you want to park in a pay and display you have to locate a vacant space before you pay and display. There is no guarantee of a space.

Simply put. If you could park your car outside your house without issue for years and today you cant, then you have lost your parking space. You may not have owned it but it was there for you to use and now its gone.

I bought a new house this year and ruled out several my wife had suggested as there wasn't a close enough bus stop. I'd be delighted if there was one outside my house.

I think i would pay more for a house with a bus stop outside a different house 100m down the road than one without a bus stop near it.

I would avoid a house with a bus stop outside the door or garden of the house like the plague though. A friend grew up in a house like this. There were always people sitting on the wall and throwing rubbish especially butts into their garden that her father seemed to be constantly cleaning up. He tried growing a hedge at the wall but it never grew because people kept breaking it. Always seemed to be dog poo at it too.

I would like the convenience of having one near, but not at my house.

I think people are being fairly harsh on the OP. **** having a bus stop right in front of your house.

A friend of mine moved due to a bus stop outside her house (and she doesn't even drive!) for this very reason. The property was on a busy bus route and also close to a secondary school.

She underestimated the impact the bus stop would have when she moved in, and felt she had some loss of privacy, because of a constant stream of passengers either sitting on or leaning up against her front garden wall, school kids messing while waiting on the bus, etc. She ended up keeping her blinds closed day and night. Luckily she was renting and moved out at the end of the lease.

I don't know what the OP can do or who they can appeal to, if there wasn't at least resident permit parking in place.

I grew up with a bus stop outside my parents house, it is fine.

In the end we all want good infrastructure and good public transport. The bus stop needs to go somewhere, it will be a bit of a lottery if it goes in front of your house or your neighbours house, but it is going somewhere and someone is going to be annoyed, tough, that is life, you win some and you lose some.

In the end, it is a public road, it isn’t your parking spot, it isn’t your property, it is the property of the public and it is administered by your local council. Your council can change the use of that space at any time, put in a bus stop, a cycle lane etc.

You might not like it, but in the end that doesn’t matter, it is what it is.
