Family Car For Twins (EV/Hybrid/ICE)

    Hi,

I am looking at getting a family car for the arrival of twins in Feb-Mar 24.

Main usage will be city driving, however, approximately 10 return trips per year from Galway-Cork, 2 return trips per year Galway-West Cork. The odd trip to Dublin too perhaps. Approx 10k mileage per year.

I had been thinking of getting a 2-3 yr old Skoda Octavia or Superb estate (possibly Hybrid or Petrol due to mainly city driving). When I looked, with the second hand pricing it just makes no sense to buy a 2 or 3 yr old car rather than new. Minimal savings.

I see that EV prices are dropping but I cannot see any estate EVs or EVs with large boots that would be worth looking at. I do have free charging in work.

Are there any cars that you guys would recommend considering? Am I better off to wait till early 2024 to see if the downward EV pricing trend also hits the used ICE car pricing?

    Budget approx 40k.

    Main requirements

    • 5 NCAP rating
    • Storage for Twin Prams etc... when visiting Cork
    • A/C
    • Reverse camera and sensors
    • Reliable

    Thanks

ID4 has a very large boot and I'm sure it would fit a twin pram - you can fit a washing machine in the boot with the shelf out, but probably not much else (this will be true of almost every car though). If you are going to me moving a lot of stuff and you need extra space, a roof box is out for an EV - it just saps battery. No roof box, you'll comfortably do the Galway city cork city spin. Tailgate mounted boxes do work well with EVs though. You will also be able to do Galway to Bantry via Cork city non stop. ID77kwh pretty much has a no anxiety range of 300km (all weathers, road types) in Ireland. You will need to charge at your destination for the return journey in both instances. If it's family, get them to install chargers and get them to apply today or tomorrow for the grant as it halves on 1st Jan for new applications.

The car will also effectively be a four seater though, with two car seats.

If you choose an ID4, you should be able to pick up a used 221, 222 for about 30k now, or high 20's in the new year. I wouldn't buy a new EV as there is considerable uncertainty around future value - budget min 50% depreciation over 3 years in all cases.

Test your car seats, pram and a large and small suitcase in any car you take for a spin before buying. Congratulations and best of luck with your twins.

Thanks for the detailed feedback and good wishes.

I was looking at the ID 4 Vs the Enyaq IV but the Enyaq has far less models available and runs at a minimum of €40k for a 22/23 model. The ID 4 has only 8% less boot space -42 litres). Very little difference in the NCAP safety ratings.

The interior of the Enyaq seems to be preferred from reading threads online.

For us the extra cab and seat height would make it a bit easier loading the kids in and out of the car but we intend getting the swivel baby car seats so I don't think that's a big deciding factor.

The difference in €10k could allow us to get solar installed and a charger in place.

    Thanks,

    Philip
