VRT disaster

    Hi all

    I purchased a 2019 Peugeot 508 SW GT 2.0 diesel.

Lovely car, delighted with it however VRT has been a disaster.

The cars stat code is on their site but they are saying it needs a new stat code because the the BHP difference is 4 less than whats on their system.

The car was purchased in NI , plates are NI and have never been changed, there was 2 owners from new.

The V5 does say UK however I have a PDI from the dealer it was purchased, on the day it was purchased.

I have numerous invoices for tyres services etc all from the north pre brexit

I have the warranty details again from the dealer in Derry.

VRT office wont accept any of these, they will just accept previous tax/insurance.

I spoke to a guy who imports cars and he said he can get it done in another center (the person I dealt with is known to be difficult,)

The issue is the VRT cost less nox/co2 5900, 6080 all in where as the calculation based on revenues site is 4150 in total.

At this point im not sure what to do , suck it up and pay the 6k?

Is your issue with VAT and duty or VRT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,514 ✭✭✭XsApollo

Well I think you have to pay the VRT amount and appeal after.

happened to me years ago, I paid 10k to vrt a Saab 9-3 had to appeal after and I got a 6k refund.

unless it’s changed since they changed how cars are VRT’d, I don’t know.

The car is not on the system if it does not match, different BHP, so different Stat Code is required

Contact the DVLA in NI, if the car was registered there all it's life then they will have proof including MOT info.

I have the MOT info, it’s a 2019 and the MOT was for last this year (post brexit )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭skinny90

Yeah I’m thinking I may need to appeal. The guy I dealt with in order to get a price did mention I could appeal but he also said I could also risk having to pay more which didn’t really make sense.

Your issue is with VAT and customs its just being dealt with at the VRT centre

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,678 ✭✭✭User1998

You need tax insurance or MOT from before brexit, not post brexit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭skinny90

yeah i cant ring the person previous for this. I bought it through a dealer. the only information I can get is the PDI which I obtained through the dealer and MOT info which isn't valid

its not, its a 2019 car! As I said I got someone else to go to another center and they processed it

OK, well then I'm not sure why the UK address on the V5 is an issue, nor revenue looking for tax discs etc. Presumably you've received VAT / duty clearance already on an exemption basis for it being an NI car?

Anyway, if the exact car isn't on revenues system, any other existing stat code is inconsequential. They'll get a unique quote for you - which you now have. You need to pay it, and then appeal, or take the car out of the country within 30 days. This comes from Rosslare - not the person working at the desk in your NCT centre - so I'm not sure going to a different centre will achieve anything, especially since the car has already been presented to them at this stage.

VRT is the same for a NI car or a UK car. The only reason you’d need to prove its from NI is to avoid VAT and customs duty

6k seems like massive VRT - is it an auto and high co2? What value have revenue put on it?

Heading for the vrt office in a couple of weeks, if you don't mind, where was this center? Sounds like one to try avoid

Avoid Greenhills if your from around there. They are a nightmare. Ballymount are sound.

You aren’t dealing with the centre in Kells by any chance ? Had the same issues myself recently. Bunch of halfwits working there haven’t got a clue . Making it up as they go along . Ask for A B and C one day then when you go back a different living brain donor tells you D E and F are required and A B and C aren’t. How in the name of God would you have someone you’ve never met insurance details from years ago ? If you did somehow obtain them handing them over is a breach of GDPR . I had murder with those clowns and only got sorted when I noted all their numbers and made it clear I’d be getting someone sacked if they messed me about any further . There is a reason they have a sign about not attacking or abusing staff on the wall . They certainly get people’s backs up with their attitude and overall incompetence

I might add we spoke to revenue who confirmed what we were asked for by NCT staff was totally incorrect

Just to clear some things up about stat codes.

if say for example you have a Focus 1.6 TDCI 113bhp, and emissions of 119. That may have a stat code of 1234567

A Focus 1.6 TDCI 115bhp with emissions of 119 May have a stat code 7654321

A Focus 1.6 TDCI 115bhp with emissions of 109 may have a stat code 9876543

They will all have separate new values, different depreciation codes, and different OMSPs,

You can’t just get one that’s pretty close. Unless the exact model and co2 emissions exist on the system for your particular car, then it’s a clean sheet valuation.

@colm_mcm , can I ask what happens in this situation? I’m looking to import a Porsche (or not depending on the outcome) but the only model

listed on the VRT calculator website is a Taycan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,678 ✭✭✭User1998

The details get sent to Revenue for a manual valuation and they calculate the VRT themselves instead of the online calculator doing it for them. Usually takes 10 days or so.

how come when I went through a 3rd party with the same documentation where I was getting nowhere, I got a price on the spot when they went in?

im sure its been noted on this forum for knowing someone who imports cars and to get them to help you if you’ve bother.

the whole system is corrupt as f*ck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 789 ✭✭✭GSBellew

Well either you missed something in your paperwork or your agent is complicit in the corruption.

They are so rude and distant and non engaging.

He needs his f#@&£#g car. Help him out show some empathy, less of the FBI SHHYYYTTEEE.

I had an 'episode' with them years ago.... And I swear they made me feel like a f£#@&*g fraud/fake/chancer etc etc..

When I eventually got the info they were looking for (which they could easily have obtained)from their COMRADES in the UK..

Well to be honest they had beaten me and like a f£#@&n fool I was gonna give them a gift of chocolates and spirits!?

I was so naive back then.

is it not regardless of the codes that the OMSP will vary depending on any optional extras fitted, like leather upholstery etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Depends on whether they were actual factory extras, and not part of a trim level. That only applies to certain brands and there’s a sliding scale down to 0% at 4 years old.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

It’s all about being able to find your exact model on the calculator. It’s not laid out 100% logically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,678 ✭✭✭User1998

What do you mean you got nowhere? You give them the correct documentation and you either get a price on the spot or you wait 10 days. Certain staff are more laid back than others but its hardly corrupt. You probably just didn’t have all the required documents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭pah

Another tip is book as late an appointment as you can 8.45pm on a Friday night is a good one. Most likely you'll get someone who just wants to get out of there and will hardly give the car a second look (re extras) That combined with a centre that is regarded as not acting the gowl is a good combo.

Sorry, one more basic question. Can I make an appointment in advance of bringing in the car to avoid a nasty surprise or can they only check the prices once the car is physically in front of them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

They will only assess it when it's front of them.
