We've got to close our "open ended" obligation to asylum seekers

Cormac Lucey made a good point earlier in the week when he said our so-called "international obligations" to asylum seekers are open ended. In other words, unlimited. If 10 million came to claim asylum tomorrow, we would have to just take them all in.

This is the crutch of the current unrest. In effect, this open ended obligation removes our sovereignty as a nation and a society. It directly conflicts with our own interests in housing, reducing crime and public services, as well as simply having control over who comes in to the country. The fact is there are well over a billion people in the third world who would move to Ireland if they could.

We've got to mature as a country, grow a spine and legislate to put an end to the open ended nature. Perhaps something like above a certain threshold per year, we pay to help house them in a Mediterranean country ,where their application can be processed. This is just common sense. But the powerful NGO refugee industry needs to be faced down. And they are a money making industry like any other.
