Hi all, current 2nd family car is due a replacement, we've had since new a Clio 1.2, 2010, just broke 100k (km) this year, regularly serviced never failed an NCT, but as I've found out recently that version of 1.2 is heavy on oil and its been getting worse, possible head gasket on the way out too according to mechanic, was only really holding onto it for some teens to learn to drive, one 19 (2 fails on driving test) and 16 soon to be 17 in spring mad to get going too, so all that aside, time for me to get something a bit more upmarket if you can say that.

wife has always got the new cars as they are the families main car, mine the school runaround and low mileage to work, so have eye on BMW 1 series in Auto though,

seems the 1.5l 3 cylinder is the better more reliable version as opposed to the 1.6l, not interested in speed or performance more concerned for comfort and reliability

seen a good few 2016/17/18 models in budget, any advice appreciated, something to be aware of mechanically etc, spec level to aim for, perhaps I need to throw net further afield on different make or model, no particular brand loyalty, we've owned alot of brands over the years, Toyota, Opel, Fiat, Ford, Peugeot, Renault, Nissan, Kia

Thanks, our other car is a PHEV, yep have driveway and charger already, 20k max budget, was considering full electric but they are usually for budget smaller cars, done my time in the Clio at this stage

Japanese import? I'd search for a car with service history in this country from new.

Ad says NI reg car and gives the reading in miles and most Japanese cars have lower mileage,

Some times I get my stereotypes mixed up, who are world famous for potatoes, heavy drinking and roguish behavior and who are famous for being reserved, polite, hard working and falling on ones sword if a mistake is made.

I saw a youtube video once on a service in a Japanese garage, short of it was, manager meets the customer, manager explains what will be done and when to collect, customer comes back and manager and the mechanic is there to greet him and the mechanic reports to the customer, its more than just a service its nearly a ceremony .

My own Japanese imports were fully serviced, since the last service done in japan, only 1000km was clocked, so I proceeded to drive it for 4000 km more and 2 months late, most of the km was on battery anyway.

I have no regrets or worry about buying Japanese imports.

ID3 are hitting that budget now, I would prefer a bigger car also, the 225xe is not the biggest car but the weekly shopping fits in the boot, 2 kids, 12 and 8 in seat belts and 3 year old in a child seat, seem happy enough.
